Taking refuge from the weather on the small island of Kolyuchin, known for the weather station that once operated on it in Soviet times, photographer Dmitry Kokh saw movement in one of the abandoned buildings that remained in the village since the station had closed in 1992. Photography. A color photograph of abandoned old houses on an island in the Russian Arctic, where polar bears have now moved in and are living. Two old, staggered buildings are home to two large white polar bears. The head of one polar bear sticks out of a window, while another stands on the staircase and looks in our direction. There is old wood in front of the buildings and everything looks very bleak. Almost like an oil painting.
Info: The photo is part of a series. Other photos show that four polar bears already live there and that the area is littered with old oil drums. All photos can be seen in the Natural History Museum in London.

Polar bears on an abandoned island

Russian underwater and wildlife photographer Dmitry Kokh took a trip of a lifetime to an abandoned meteorological station on Kolyuchin Island. This small island, located in the Chukchi Sea, is in a remote area of the Russian arctic. While humans have long since left the area, Kokh discovered that there are other creatures making themselves comfortable. Polar bears have overtaken the station, turning the old buildings into cozy homes and, from the looks of it, thriving.
