Today ERS (Electoral Reform Society) has published an in-depth report on the recent election, A System Out of Step: The 2024 #GeneralElection. The 2024 General Election was unprecedented for all the wrong reasons.

The most disproportional election ever, in terms of how we voted and the parliament we got. The first UK #election where four parties received over 10% of the vote, and five parties received over 5% of the vote. The lowest combined vote share for Labour and the Conservatives in the era of universal suffrage.

It is clear from the general election that we are all voting as if we already have a proportional electoral system. Yet, Westminster's #FirstPastThePost system can't cope with this new multi-party reality.

The report cuts through the headlines on the election and looks at how Westminster's First Past the Post system blocks voters from getting the results they want.

2. Biden got a lot of votes in the 2020 General election, true, but impossible to say how many of those were FOR Biden as compared to votes AGAINST a 2nd term for one of the worst presidents ever. That comes down to our busted voting system ( #EndFPTP ), but it is what it is, and because of that you can't, with much seriousness, say that those votes should count as people voting FOR Harris.

1/3 of the vote gets you 2/3 of the seats. I think the new government will be an improvement but this just isn't right. People are praising Starmer for his brilliance when in fact Corbyn persuaded more people to vote Labour in an earlier election. The reason the result is different is because our system is a lottery, not a credible way of choosing a government. #FPTP #EndFPTP #PR #makevotesmatter

In what world can #Starmer claim that #FPtP delivers "strong government"?

How many Prime Ministers has the country had in the last parliament? 'Strong and stable' May, 'narcissistic' Johnson, 'lettuce' Truss and now Mr Integrity 'liar' Sunak.

This system might initially give Starmer the power for which he yearns, but it won't last. When his authoritarianism and lack of vision disappoints the electorate, I doubt he'll make a second term.

@jerry there is a third track but the people on the two main tracks do everything they can to not let people know that there is a third and people controlling the switch have done everything they can to make sure that the switch can never end up on anyone's track but their own.

Just another of the pitfalls involved in handing the keys to the kingdom to minority govts. In this case made worse by allowing the minority govt party to appoint a PM with no mandate, approved by a king with no conscience.
