In a statement provided to the Guardian, the Paris-based Picasso Administration said after it issued a “please explain” to Mona, the museum expressed its regrets and declared itself ready to withdraw the paintings.

“While we can only regret this situation and the current overexposure, we believe that this matter is now closed,” the statement said, adding that although the institute bore no grudge against Mona or Kaechele, the museum needed to keep in mind that intellectual and creative property laws applied to everyone.

How Easily the Internet Can Propagate a False Attribution

This photograph was posted on a photo forum as a genuine 19th century photograph on the flimsiest of attributions, some anon on reddit. This image is now for sale in Etsy stores and Ebay, on totebags and coffee cups as a photograph by Felix Tiollier a 19th centry industrialist and serious amateur photographer. Opinions in the forum ranged from it's AI to I saw it in a textbook years ago.

The "Thiollier" photograph appears to be part of a set of photographs taken by modern photographer Hanna Babitskaya in 2011. I found others from the set for Vogue online being passed off as Victorian. The horse in this photo has the same mane as the horse in others. I think this one in particular is photoshopped to look old. So while its not AI its definitely not a Thiollier.

I have searched the catalogs of the D'orsay (main repository of his work) the Met and The National Gallery. This photograph does not exist in any museums as a Thiollier. The first instance of this being passed as one is in 2019. Likely because the photographer is Eastern European they decided to change the authorship and
market it under a different name. I've enjoyed this bit of sleuthing. Also as a sidenote I went through all issues of Camera Work and Thiollier was never in it.

It's amazing how opinion coalesced around the extremes (it's absolutely real/fake) vs. let's find out. The earliest reference to this photograph anywhere was 2019 on Reddit and the poster there commented they stole it from yet another website with the false attribution.
