There was a movie with a riveting scene of a plutonium core almost going critical when a researcher put it into a vise and applied pressure. I think it might have been the movie Infinity with Matthew Broderick playing Richard Feynman. Well, I just heated a crab cake in my microwave oven for two minutes, as per instructions, and am pretty sure from its energized state when I opened the oven door that it was quite close to going critical.

Now I'm reading the first chapter of Volume 3 of the Lectures as per its recommendation and it's rather fascinating.

I'm imagining this, in the best analog my amateur mind can come up with, as our dimension being a pond (i.e. body of water), with the wave being ripples on that pond's surface. Then when interacting with the surface, it breaks the tension and what created the ripple now breaks through and sinks in. In the process, what produced the ripple is eradicated and ..

3/3...it's usually here that someone mentions #Feynman famously pointing out the two slit experiment encapsulating the (then) main mysteries of #QM. The experiment is fairly simple and without much fuss gets us to particle - wave duality and the question of the role of the observer...and all without a vat of nitrogen.
Yes. In fact principles at the time eventually found this so persistently irritating that the answer was to simply stop talking about quantum foundations altogether. Courage !

Feynman mentions an encounter he had with the "Birch Society", and "Americanism".

He knows that the kind lady he's speaking to is advocating for authoritarian repression, and tries to argue against it with her.

"I tried to explain to her(...) that in any organization there ought to be the possibility of discussion. That fence sitting is an art, and it's difficult, and it's important."

This Unscientific Age

I, in preparation for this lecture, investigated something that was in my town, in the shopping center. There
was a store with al flag in front. And it's the Americanism
Center, Altadena Americanism Center. And I went into the Americanism Center to find out what it is, and
it's a volunteer organization. And on the front outside,
and letter which explains their purpose, which is to
there is a Constitution and the Bill of Rights,
maintain rights, all in accordance with the
general idea. What they do in there is simply educative
Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
They have books that people could buy on the various
subjects that help to teach the ideas of citizenship, and they have, among other books, also Congressional records, pamphlets on Congressional investigations, so that people who are studying these problems can read them. They have study groups which meet at night. So, being interested in rights for
people, asked, since I said I didn't know very much about it, I would like a book on the problem of the freedom of the Negroes to vote in the South. There was nothing Yes, there was. There was one thing which turned up later, two things which saw out of the corner of my eye. One was what went on in Mississippi according to the
Oxford city fathers, and the other was a little pamphlet
called "The National Association for the Advancement
of Colored People and Communism So I discussed it at some greater length to discover100

what was going on and talked to the lady for a while and
she explained among other things (we talked about
many things-we did this on a friendly basis, you will be
surprised to hear) that she was not a member of the Birch
Society but there was something that you could say for
the Birch Society, she saw some movie about it and and there was something that she could say for it. You're
not a fence sitter when you're in the Birch Society. At
least you know what you 're for, because you don`t have
to join it if you don't want to, and this is what Mr. Welch
said. and this is the way the Birch Society is. and if you
believe in this then you join, and if you don't believe in
this then you shouldn't join. It sounds just like the Communist Party. It's all very well if they have no power. But
if they have power, it's a completely different situation. I
tried to explain to her that this is not the kind of freedom
being talked about, that in any organization
there ought to be the possibility of discussion. That fence

rather than to go headlong in one direction or the other.
It's just better to have action, isn't it, than to Sit on the
fence? Not if you re not sure which way to go, it isn't.
So I bought a couple of things there, just at random
that they had. One of the things was called "The Dan

the Constitution, and a general idea Pl ...

I picked this up because it was the only Feynman book on the shelf of my local public library, but as usual with Feynman it's a very worthwhile read.

He said this in 1963, and would be horrified to see his country in 2025.

the beginning. We have plenty of time to solve the problems. The only way that we will make a mistake is that in the impetuous youth of humanity we will decide we know the answer. This is it, No one else can think of any- thing else. And we will jam. We will confine man to the limited imagination of today's human beings

We are not so smart. We are dumb. We are ignorant. We must maintain an open channel. I believe in limited government. I believe that government should be limited in many ways, and what I am going to emphasize is only an intellectual thing I don't want to talk about every- thing at the same time. Let's take a small piece, an intel lectual thing.

No government has the right to decide on the truth of scientific principles, nor to prescribe in any way the character of the questions investigated. Neither may a government determine the aesthetic value of artistic creations, nor limit the forms of literary or artistic expression. Nor should it pronounce on the validity of economic, historic religious, or philosophical doctrines. Instead it has a duty to its citizens to maintain the freedom, to let those citizens contribute to the further adventure and the development of the human race. Thank you.

Together with Simone Hu, we have a new #preprint in theoretical #physics, or rather #mathematics.
The upshot is that there is a certain formulation of #Feynman integrals that is useful in a class of #quantum field theories (namely, 1-dimensional topological directions in holomorphic-topological theories). The integrand of these integrals is what we call "topological form".
On the other hand, there is a family of integrals that detects cohomology classes in the odd graph complex. That means, they find out whether some graph can be generated by shrinking edges in a certain way. The integrand in these integrals is called "Pfaffian form".
In our new preprint, we prove that the Pfaffian form and the topological form are the same.

In #physics, #quantum field theory is used to describe the behavior of elementary particles. #Feynman diagrams are used to visualize, and compute, the "elementary" processes that can happen. However, the processes that really occur in nature are a sum of infinitely many Feynman diagrams. Of course, in an actual computation, one can only include finitely many processes, and all the other ones need to absorbed into some "effective" parameters, such as effective charges. This is called #renormalization, and it involves a freedom regarding how exactly one defines the effective parameters. Two renormalization schemes are common in high energy physics: In "kinematic renormalization", one defines the effective parameters as the actually measured values of a certain scattering process. In "minimal subtraction", one chooses the effective parameters such that the computation is as easy as possible, regardless of what the parameters mean concretely.
Certain infinite sums of Feynman diagrams, called "rainbows" (see picture), had been computed in minimal subtraction 30 years ago. In a recent preprint arxiv.org/abs/2503.02079 I computed the analogous sums in the minimal subtraction scheme. The solution is structurally similar to the known one, but they involve slightly more complicated functions.
The sum of rainbows by itself is not a physically relevant observable. But since it is one of the few infinite classes of Feynman diagrams that can be solved exactly, it is often used as a model to describe qualitative features, such as how quickly these sums grow if one includes more and more terms.

The first three terms in an infinite sum of rainbow diagrams. These diagrams consist of one horizontal line, and an increasing number of nested arcs that connect to the base line on both ends. Each line represents an elementary particle, each meeting point of multiple lines is an elementary interaction.
