oh joy, another problem with my Framework 16. this time a very strange keyboard quirk.

For whatever reason, all of a sudden when I try to "ctrl+g" (or ctrl-h, or ctrl+e), the ctrl key gets released the instant I press "g" even though I'm still holding down ctrl.

it only happens with (at least) g, h, or e. other keys don't cause ctrl to incorrectly release.

it still happens when I boot to a different, live USB distro, so it's not my OS.

at first I thought maybe QMK/VIA was somehow at fault, but I can't see any reason why any of my layers would interfere in such a strange way.

no idea if this is a hardware issue or a firmware issue, but if I swap my fn and ctrl keys, the newly mapped ctrl key doesn't have this problem anymore

seems like a defective keyboard. and since framework only sells their computers with 1 year of warranty I'm sure the only option they will give me at this point is for me to pay for a new keyboard out of my own pocket.

@frameworkcomputer Any updates on Coreboot support? Heard it was "intended but low on the priority list" but that was years ago if I recall correctly. Would love to get Libreboot (or just Coreboot) working on my fw16. Thank you!

@wild1145 @frameworkcomputer I've had a #framework13 for a couple of years now and I love it. The one problem I have with it is that it needs additional cooling when under any form of load. I'm told that the #Framework16 has the same issue. #Repairable

If you are plugging a portable USB-C powered monitor into a Framework 16 laptop and the monitor keeps rebooting ... it's not getting enough power.

You have to use a USB-C module that's plugged into one of some specific sockets -- the two four "furthest back" on either side, kinda closest to where you would normally expect to power a laptop. The front two won't work.

And: "Ports 1,2,4,5 are shared on a first come first serve basis. So they are 1.5A by default, but one port from any of these can negotiate 3A over PD. Once that is taken, the other ports are limited to 1.5A. Ports 3,6 are 900mA."

There's a flyer that comes in the box about this, but I didn't make the connection (pun intended) until the symptom popped up.

[73714.072490] i2c_designware AMDI0010:03: controller timed out

前幾天更新 (`pacman -Syu`) 後會讓這則系統錯誤訊息發生,同時觸控板就變成不能用了。

重開機可以解。

好像不是定時發生,而是有什麼特定手勢會讓這個狀況發生。

@DJGummikuh@pixelfed.de interesting discovery: One of the Screws attaching the mainboard to the chassis appears to be missing, Position 3/6 @frameworkcomputer

I am very certain I did not loose it, as this is the first time ever I'm digging this deep into my , could this be cause for anything?

ok so today I will replace the liquid metal cooling of my with a PTM7958 Thermal Pad cooling. The bad thing: the guide on how to do this has THIRTHY-NINE STEPS to install the thing on the photo
The good thing: There IS a guide and only a single tool required to perform it. Still love the concept, even though I have performance issues (which hopefully should be partially solved with this *free* upgrade)

@craige @AlexanderMars @ErickaSimone @GrapheneOS I concur. I've had good experiences with #GrapheneOS on Pixel devices for five years and just moved from a #System76 #OryxPro running Pop!_OS to a #FrameWork16 running #NixOS.

Though have had trouble with coverting the System76 laptop to NixOS due to fan drivers always running the fan at 100%, which is unacceptable for a server.

A year in review with my #framework16 Laptop:
(If people are interested, I can make a more fleshed out and in-depth review; maybe make a video one)

Unboxing:
Everything was neatly packaged and properly labeled; except for the "Expansion Bay Shell Interposer". It didn't take me long to get everything out and ready for assembly.

Building:
For the most part, the assembly instructions listed at https://guides.frame.work/ were good enough. Looking for the screw numbers was a little bit of a pain but I was able to follow the video instructions without too much trouble. I would recommend checking out the videos even if you have worked on many other PCs before. From start to end, it took me about 45 mins to get everything assembled.

Are Here #framework users which can recommend dockingstations which allow you to start a #framework16 laptop by pushing a button on the dockingstation? #frameworklaptop
Or can @frameworkcomputer directly recommend one?

I was trying to get a new computer before the tariffs hecked in, but I ended up sending back my because of a defective touchpad. The irony of modular parts is they fight replacing defective ones.

I was extremely disappointed that even after several different attempts and experiments to get it working, I just couldn’t get Blender to use my AMD GPU on my #framework16 in Ubuntu.

It was an absolutely miserable experience. That and the fact that in Ubuntu even going through configuration command line stuff I could not get the touchpad to not scroll wildly when using two-finger gestures.

Ubuntu just is not ready to be a Windows replacement yet for anyone who doesn’t have a Computer Science degree. I still hope it will be better and more successful in the near future - very much like how things worked with Blender itself. (In the mid-2000s I swore to myself I’d never ever use Blender again.)

After spending a week with the I don't think I'm cut out for this level of futzing and hardware debugging. It's been fun playing some games, but it will be going back if I can't get passed the touchpad and keyboard issues.

Touchpad on the is rough. It's zooming and right-clicking a when I'm trying to scroll. Really hobbling and otherwise amazing machine.

@annaaurora @iFixit Huh. I haven't even noticed the fans on the #Framework16. How long ago did you compare the #Framework13 with your #thinkpad?

2025-03-17

It's a fair point @annaaurora
For me though, having the flexibility of moving ports around outweighs the limitation of six ports (on #Framework16). I tend to use a docking station when the laptop is on my desk, so port count is even less of an issue there.

I run Arch, btw.

Of course, you can't tell, it's just a KDE Plasma 6 desktop set up the way I like.

So far the only thing that's given me trouble has been Steam (resolved by using the Flatpak version), although I still don't have everything set up and configured, and I haven't tried a whole bunch of stuff yet. I'll probably write a blog post.

A screen shot of my desktop, showing KDE Plasma 6. Along the left side of the screen is a panel with my application icons. Top-right is the a status tray thing showing app notifications and system status stuff. Along the right side of the screen are widgets showing an analog clock, CPU usage, network speed, RAM/storage usage, and the local weather forecast.
