RE: dice.camp/@SubplotKudzu/115851

Last nights 13th Age game with library kids had an interesting engagement moment: once they killed the Specter of a Yuan-Ti general the two middle school kids (younger siblings of the HS kids) were 125% all in on “WHAT IS THE TREASURE!?” Yelling over each other for what they wanted.

Since this was a reskinned AD&D 1E adventure the hoard was fabulously detailed, feeding the sheer avarice on display.

Last nights OSR-style game with the library kids was, thanks to the oracular bones of St. Cuthbert, about as cinematic a session as I've ever run.

Some context: a century ago the city of Koralgesh was betrayed by its chief wizard, who lowered the city's defenses to allow demon-backed pirates to enter. The city's god, Kor, destroyed the city via volcanic eruption to kill the invaders and give refugees a chance to escape.

For the library kids this week I took a very old John Nephew adventure from Dungeon #6 and reskinned it from a demonically tainted cairn to an under-the-burned-out-Yuan-Ti-temple dungeon with minimal effort. It was a joy to watch the older kids interact with the Yuan-Ti remains and ghosts and explaining to the younger kids all the shit that went down in the Forbidden City 18-20 months ago.

This is why you run long campaigns.

When I told my Ace daughter that O-Chul had identified as Asexual she burst into tears and said that Rich Burlew was a damn legend.

Never let anyone tell you that representation doesn't matter.

Three panels of the online D&D inspired comic strip Order of the Stick in which the paladin O-Chul explains his asexual life philosophy to an enthusiastic Beholder.

(in panel not visible) Beholder: wait, are you asexual? Me too!
Panel 1:
O-Chul: I... suppose so. I don't normally use that term
Beholder: So how do you reproduce? Parthenogenesis? Budding? Or is it Mitosis? Do you split into two smaller versions of yourself? Wait, is that where gnomes come from?
Panel 2
O-Chul: No. How do I put this? I reproduce by living my life in such a way that my deeds might inspire others and my ideals might take root in their hearts. Thus, when I am gone there will still be those who are my descendants. At least in the ways that matter to me.
Panel 3:
Beholder: Ooooooh, so like Spores!
O-Chul: Yes, I make invisible mind spores.
Beholder: That is so cool!

The joy of OSR is having no idea what happens next. The library kids were exploring several smaller rooms off a central chamber and the one with the Sculpt Elements spell found some petrified guards. She asked if her spell could undo that and since Knave doesn’t have a specific “stone to flesh” spell i said “sure” and now she has two new century out of date but very grateful henchmen. (It helped that she is a follower of the same god these guys worship.)

I'm not sure I can say I gave Draw Steel a full fair test, but I did confirm that it was NOT going to work with the library kids.

Part is on me: I have never run tactical combat the way that DS is designed for, and I found the unfamiliar cognitive load burdensome.

Part of it is on the Delian Tomb, the starter adventure, which opens with 4 big combats with minimal interstitial tissue that, with my cognitive load issues, wore me down.

I’m sure someone has done this before but I had the image this morning of introducing a pair of undead investigators (investigators who happen to be undead) for the Lich King named Moulder and Scummy

But I don’t know that any of the library kids would get the joke

Library Games With Kids:
“The divine light of the sun strikes the gem over the statue. A lance of energy strikes the second pillar from the north, revealing a small depression.”

“Why is the pillar depressed? Can it tell us what’s wrong?”

“No it’s the Great Depression! The pillar’s economy is collapsed!”

“It will have to shave off its edges to feed its kids!”

realized I hadn’t shared; the Draw Steel kids decided 4 of the 5 of them are the crew of the Lethe Exploration Ship _Hellbound_ that acts as the French Foreign Legion for one of the cities of hell. The _Hellbound_ came under attack when entering this manifold, and the everyone but the PCs and the captain used escape ships. The PCs held the ship together on the crash… which was right next to the 5th PCs hermitage. He has offered help… if they help Broadhurst

Picked up the Draw Steel _Delian Tomb_ midway through the first 5-encounter dungeon, now with new PCs rather than pregens.

Room 2 has a "speak friend, and enter" level riddle to open a secret door and the Players instead... destroyed the wall, the statue, and the mechanism via force. With the door now stuck halfway open the Dragon Knight Fury looks at the wall and answers the riddle.

"Smart enough to answer the riddle, not smart enough to recognize it is a riddle."

The library kids took my "you can play a high elf in any game" suggestion to heart, so our new Draw Steel PCs are
a Devil Censor Exorcist,
a Devil Earth Elementalist,
a Dwarven Talent Telekinetic,
a Dragon Knight Fury Reaver,
and a Revenant Time Raider Tactician Vanguard

Today we are going to Session 0 it with hashing out what they want in a campaign framework, followed by developing cultures and selecting complications.

Should be fun!

As I’m waiting to hear back from the kids about their ancestry and class desires for Draw Steel i kinda wish they’d coordinate and all play Revenants.. they are the restless dead of a prior adventuring company or ideally ships crew. The Revenant ancestry lets you pick what ancestry you had before you were dead so still plenty of space for a diverse cast.

Just all, ya’know, dead.

We have had 2 sessions of Delian Tomb, the Draw Steel on ramp adventure with the library kids, and I’m not sure my approach is showing off the game toy its true potential. So over the next 2 weeks before session 3 we are ditching the pregens and everyone is making their own characters to increase investment. Fortunately @mattcolville just dropped a “here’s what the classes are” video which will help immensely.

Looking forward to the new PC

Spent the morning running walk-in D&D for three hours; three parents & five kids 12 and under at the town library Fandom event. Using the _Knave_ rules and the classic module _B4 The Lost City_. They didn’t get far in, several of them got killed (mostly on purpose as the family needed to move on to other events) but the last PC, heavily wounded, escaped to the surface with the location of water to save their lost caravan. Everyone had fun so it’s a win!

That lumber stealing NPC is now willing to marry, btw. So that's a success.

A challenge when playing farming/life sim games with children is their lack of awareness of resources and inventory. Saving up for that one building that requires 10 rare pieces of lumber? Forget it, the child has gone off and completed a quest where she gave away those very rare pieces of wood as gifts to improve their friendship with some random NPC.

I was preparing my thank you 'zine for the one issue APA @drcpunk is making to celebrate Lee Gold and A&E, and came across this in one of my 2019 'zines.

In Memorium

Monica Kangley of East Hampton, CT died last week. She
was the towns children’s librarian from 1977 to 2001 and was
the one who let my friends and I play Dungeons & Dragons
there every Saturday morning in the early 80s. I was likely
going to play D&D regardless, but she gave us a space to
meet, facilitating a cluster of Lifelong friendships. Then helped
again for my college friends and I to find a place to play
Amber Diceless Role-paying once we had all graduated from
college, giving us access weekend evenings to the senior
center conference room at the library. I would make sure to
say hi whenever I was in the town library, and kept some
contact through my parents once we moved far away.

Reading her obituary, I find I knew next to nothing of the
woman's life — born in the Bronx, educated in Nova Scotia,
15 years as a librarian in a religious order, world traveler. She
could easily have lived a life of adventure in any of our games.

There are always people who intersect with your life and
help you in tiny ways to become the person you are going to
be. Thank you, Monica, for everything you did for me.
2025-08-21

After 26 months of play we just had the “final” session of the 13th Age game at the library. At least final for the two graduated seniors before they leave for college. It’s insane having watched these kids grow and change that this phase is over - but they did kill the weretiger wizard whose plan was weakening the empires defenses north of the Northern Colossus in the face of the Orc Lords armies, completing the House in the Frozen Lands from ‘86.
