Robert Ellis Thompson, Presbyterian minister, sees the hand of God in US history. Covetousness threatens the US, breeds conspicuous consumption, and envy by the poor. It brings to the US the old problems of the Old World.

Today, some will agree with Thompson on warning poor, but also warn those who warn about ostentation.

How can you avoid covetousness, of those above you, or for that which you do not yet possess?

ROBERT ELLIS THOMPSON (1844-1924) The hand of God in American history "The harm which this sin of covetousness is threatening to our nation is not hidden from even superficial observers. It is breeding an ostentation among the rich and an envy among the poor, threatening to rend our country with those great social rifts which we once hoped were to be confined to the Old World."

James Hamilton was a Scottish, Presbyterian minister, asks us to be a Moses, one who stands up for the helpless. Even in public transit, to reprove the leerer or cat-caller.

For those who would wear their orthodoxy on their sleeve, how would cat-callers feel around them? Relieved for a lack of any pressure to transform?

How can you be a Moses today?

... be the Moses yourself: stand up for the weak and the weaponless. ... In the public vehicle some solitary traveller, poor sempstress or servant-girl, is annoyed by the rude gaze or ruder remarks of some low-minded passenger, change places with her, or reprove the ruffian outright; and you need not be afraid, these coarse fellows are so cowardly."
