Ok, tipsy reading and posting here, so getting loquacious. But there is something weirdly refreshing about the early US 1700s as "a bunch of native nations attempt to use the English, Dutch, French, and Spanish" in their own nation building, with varying degrees of success. Everyone's trying to get new folk to go war for them. It's both refreshing and ALSO my eyes glaze as much as they do with other war histories.

Currently reading "Native Nations: A Millennium in North America", by Kathleen DuVal. This is a *fascinating* book! Highly recommended. It centers the first nations of the US in history, setting them against a sweeping history including the rest of the world. So we learn at one point that neither Natives nor Europeans understood germ theory in 1585 (and wouldn't really until 3 centuries later), but that China was already practicing inoculation.

So the Oxford University Press Word of the year is "rage bait" which narrowly fought off aura farming and biohack. Last year it was brainrot. Humanity's relationship with social media clearly isn't healthy. We need to show more discernment in our reading procurement. I would rather ask a librarian rather than Musk's or Zuckerberg's algorithms what to read next. An hour in your local library beats an hour scrolling. Your brain will thank you. #wordoftheyear #iamreading #OUP #readbetter bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cewjxq

@ratatosk A lovely review. I was a huge #ArthurRansome fan in my childhood and recently re-read the 12 S&A series 35 years later and ashamed to say I haven't read this. That review has convinced me to hunt it out! #iamreading #goodreads

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon

Thoroughly enjoyed this poignant adventure through history, social change and self-made families.

[From 'Shift', by Hugh Howey, volume 2 of the Silo trilogy]

"Donald was reminded how each silo had a mayor for shaking hands and keeping up appearances, just as the world of before had presidents who came and went.
Meanwhile, it was the men in the shadows who wielded the true power, those whose terms had no limits."

I'm on the third shift of the second book of the Silo trilogy. 'Shift', by Hugh Howey.

I don't so much do reviews, as share the sentence that makes me gasp, put the book down, and post it to Mastodon.

There have been a few of those already, but the story hooks were too deep for a pause.

Anyhoos, these ones: 1/2

Currently reading a graphic novel about the collapse of Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean civilization at the end of the Bronze Age, as told by two friends. Hoping that there are some lessons here about how marauding thieves can bring an entire era to a close.

Book cover of graphic novel titled: 1177 B.C. A Graphic History of The Year Civilization Collapsed, by Eric H. Cline and Glynnus Fawkes. The cover shows two friends anxiously walking away quickly from Mycenaean/Sea People's marauding vessels. These Raiders are landing on the beaches to attack their coastal town, most likely in Egypt.

Cover image of the book, 'The Buffalo Hunter Hunter", by Stephen Graham Jones.
The title is 'old' print, but the second "hinter" is a handwritten manuscript signature.
It shows a beige background, and in profile, facing looking right, the head and foreshoulders of a buffalo. The buffalo's gaze is forward, maybe slightly to its right.

Okay. I have sobbed my way through two of the final three chapters. I really like these people.

Enough. If you love soap opera, go read this. It's even better my second time around, and I love that in a book.

I tend to race through adventure stories the first time, to Find Out! So, those writers who are so good you love it more the second time, because you read more slowly and take in the depths, and the nuances, and fall even harder for the characters!

I have to share this bit, it just hit my funny bone: important to know that the situation the characters are in is quite dire:

"... oh, there has got to be a crime for stealing from the dead. Is there a crime for that, Reed?"

"Plagiarism", said Three Seagrass.
__________

Just cracked me up.
