I've just learned that there are several examples of milkshake duck Nobel Peace Prize winners. Here's this year's Ig Nobel Peace Prize award instead:

The Uttar Pradesh Association of Dead People was founded by Lal Bihari, an Indian farmer whose family bribed the police and government officials to declare him legally dead, so that they could take his land and property. To prove he was still alive, he had his wife apply for a widow's pension (which was denied); repeatedly tried to get arrested (so police would have to admit he's alive), and held his own "funeral." However, it still took 18 years for the government to finally correct his legal status. He was awarded an Ig Nobel Prize for his struggles in 2003.

Geim, die in Groot-Brittannië woont en verbonden is aan de universiteit van Manchester, zegt dat hij een paar maanden geleden een email van het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken kreeg, waarin hem werd meegedeeld dat hij zijn Nederlanderschap kwijt was. ‘Ik kreeg te horen dat ik mijn paspoort moest inleveren bij de Nederlandse ambassade in Londen en dat ik anders Interpol achter me aan zou krijgen.’

Geim werkte in de jaren negentig aan de Radboud Universiteit in Nijmegen als universitair hoofddocent, en nam in die tijd de Nederlandse nationaliteit aan. Indertijd werd zijn Nobelprijs gevierd als een opsteker voor de Nederlandse wetenschap. Hij is nog steeds aan de Radboud Universiteit verbonden als bijzonder hoogleraar.

‘Ik vind het heel teleurstellend dat ik mijn Nederlandse nationaliteit kwijt ben, en ben er zeer boos over. De officiële reden is dat ik ongeveer twaalf jaar geleden Brits ben geworden omdat ik een Britse ridderorde kreeg waarvoor dat een vereiste was. Ik had dat waarschijnlijk afgeslagen als ik had geweten wat dat zou betekenen voor mijn Nederlandse nationaliteit. Ik heb geprotesteerd bij Buitenlandse Zaken en de IND, maar tevergeefs.

Ik heb een koninklijke onderscheiding gekregen, ik ben Commandeur in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw. En toch ben ik het land uitgeschopt als een nutteloos ding.’
