Curtis Hansons Blick auf das Los Angeles der 1950er Jahre verweigert jede nostalgische Verklärung und legt stattdessen offen, wie Gewalt, Medien, Polizei und Kapital ineinandergreifen. Das sonnige Kalifornien als Bühne der alten weißen, vor allem männlichen Ordnung, die sich selbst bestätigt und zugleich zerstört. Ein Film, präzise, kühl und ohne jede Erlösungsfantasie. Für mich, ganz sicher einer der besten Filme der Neunziger. (3Sat, Neu)

Three novels are stacked on a desk. Brigands and Breadknives by Travis Baldree, The March by E. L. Doctorow and The Black Dahlia by James Ellory. Behind them is propped up a white paper bag for Topping & Company booksellers and a fourth book, wrapped in brown paper with the words "sci-fi western. Oh to wander a barren planet" in marker pen. There are clearly more words that follow these but they aren't visible from this angle.

Acclamations enthousiastes même, par la critique et le public israéliens, pour sa trilogie de romans historiques : « Maror », « Adama » et « Golgotha » racontent l’histoire d’Israël de la manière d’un #JamesEllroy quand il dépeint L.A. et la Californie dans ses polars comme « Black Dahlia ». Today in Labor History March 8, 1971: The Citizens Committee to Investigate the FBI stole 1,000 documents from the FBI office in Media, Pennsylvania. They later released the documents to newspapers, revealing the FBI’s COINTELPRO program, which harassed, imprisoned & murdered US political dissidents. According to Noam Chomsky, 40% of the documents were dedicated to political surveillance. James Ellroy wrote about the burglary in his 2009 novel, “Blood’s a Rover.”

Mais je vais d’abord aller voir ce que peux trouver de #LavieTidhar, auteur israélien de science-fiction et polars qui écrit pourtant en anglais pour la plupart de son œuvre. Son dernier livre, un roman-fleuve de quarante ans d’histoire des bas-fonds criminels d’Israël et ailleurs (qui fait beaucoup penser à #JamesEllroy), n’est en dépit de ses 500+ pages que le premier volet d’une trilogie en attente de finalisation. Tome 1 s’appèle « Maror », comme les herbes amères que personne ne mangerait volontairement qu’au séder, premier soir de Pessa’h en observance depuis lundi dernier, alors khag sameakh à tout le monde et bonne soirée le kulam ! 2/2

En couverture du livre de Lavie Tidhar des silhouettes de feuilles des herbes éponyme du titre « Maror », en bleu sur fond blanc, nom d’auteur en orange et titre en noir planant sur l’image d’une plante que je ne reconnaît pas mais qui fait sans doute allusion à l’herbe du titre – sauf que sur l’assiette de séder rituelle c’est normalement du raifort qui n’a aucune ressemblance avec cette plante. Il y a encore deux citations promotionnelles en bords de page, mais sans importance...
