A departing aircraft happened to fly across a batch of beautiful Cirrocumulus stratiformis, with the sun illuminating the clouds from behind and providing stark contrasts. July 2023.

I like to take telephotos of details in clouds that I find beautiful. Cirrocumulus never fails to deliver in this regard. Can you spot the Kelvin-Helmholtz waves? Often the images start looking like watercolour paintings. Not that it would necessarily be a bad thing, but I do like a good grounding element to provide a more relatable point of reference.

Finally pulled the plug on my inactive instagram account, and now I figure I should post some of the older pictures here. Should've done that a long time ago now that I think about it.

Slightly below the centre of the image there is the small black shilouette of a departing twin propeller aircraft, heading to the right, slightly away from the camera and with its nose tilted a bit upwards.
Behind the aircraft is a strikingly white mass of delicate cloud, which continues to the left and connects there to a larger sheet of varying density which spreads around from there to cover most of the image. The clouds are rich in detail, with gentle ridges and ripples here and there. Some of the ripples appear to exhibit the characteristic evenly spaced hooks of Kelvin-Helmholtz waves, also known in this context as fluctus. The clear sky behind the clouds is dark in comparison. At the edges of the image the clouds gain a slightly warmer tint as the diffracted sunlight seperates into different wavelengths at larger angles from the sun.
The image is subtly framed at the top and the lower right by lower clouds of similar colour, but fuzzier, less detailed texture.

Des ondes de #KelvinHelmholtz étaient bien visibles cette nuit depuis notre webcam de la Dôle. Ces nuages en forme de vagues se sont formés à la limite entre le sommet du stratus et le ciel clair, où la bise soufflait de manière différenciée.
