If you’re learning about the art of raising cows, you can call yourself a student of “kine,” which I just learned is a collective word for cows. (From Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Ubervilles #langsky)

Thomas Hardy’s Tess with word “kine”

The words introduced in the first food lesson in #Duolingo Swedish are: Herring, crayfish, berries, cinnamon, buns. Very Swedish! 🇾đŸ‡Ș In the second: Meatballs, mustard, cream, butter [Very early lessons already covered coffee, tea, beer, pizza, cake, and for some reason strawberries] #langsky

”Som tango me Arja Saijonmaa” ”och slĂ€pp all stress idag” I did not comment these bits that are identical to standard Swedish. The dialects are heavily influenced by both standard Fenno-Swedish & Sweden Swedish and just like in real life artists may do code gliding, e.g. to match the musicđŸ‘‡đŸ» #langsky

I have little doubt that the word ”dĂ€r” ’there’ may be pronounced as such unstressed after a nasal in ”nĂ€stan”. Yet, in the dialect the free form is ”tĂ€r” or ”tĂ€:r”. This ”t” is common to most Swedish dialects in Finland and Estonia (and typical for Faroese)đŸ‘‡đŸ» #langsky kaino.kotus.fi/fo/?p=articl...

”(Tick tick tack) hor lĂ€ng orkar do 90 grader vi e nĂ€stan dĂ€r” The text is nearly Swedish, but ”hur” ’how’ and ”du” ’you’ are pronounced with a back [ʊ] as noted a couple of skeets up, and ”lĂ€ngg” end in an audible plosive ”g”, as already noted for â€œĂ„nggon”.đŸ‘‡đŸ» #langsky bsky.app/profile/scha...

”HĂ€ll pĂ„ vatn och meir Ă„ngo no” Here the word for ’water’ appears Old Nordic as it lacks an intrusive vowel (Swedish: ”vatten”). The official lyrics spells two ’tt’ies (vattn) just to mark the shortness of the preceding vowel The diphthong in ”meir” is Old NordicđŸ‘‡đŸ» #langsky bsky.app/profile/scha...

In areas with merger of short <u> /ʉ/ [É”] with <o> /u/ (like VörĂ„) the results of shortening of long /ʉÌčː/ differ, and those of loans from Swedish. In VörĂ„ ”nu:” is /nʊ/ but in some dialects it has a marginal phoneme /nʉ̟/. In Kevin’s rap it’s either ”jʉ̟st” or ”jyst” Which one do you hear?đŸ‘‡đŸ» #langsky

NĂ„jaa, let’s dive into the text again: The chorus ends ”bada bastu jĂ„Ă„â€, while Kevin begins his rap: ”Ja: jyst ja:!” ”Ja:” is ’yes’ in Swedish, but here a discourse particle. For ’yes’ Fenno-Swedish & some dialects use ”jĂ„Ă„â€. Then there is ”jo” (”jĂ„o” in VörĂ„), to counter an expected ’noâ€™đŸ‘‡đŸ» #langsky

Bara Bada Bastu - KAJ (Eurovis...

The Swedish influenced most by Finnish was the slang in Helsinki, close to my own linguistic roots. Sadly, it is extinct and replaced by Finnish slang and ”bad” Fenno-Swedish of low stylistic register. As a legacy, a vowel-harmonic inflection occurs: att tönĂ€ ’to shove’, tönĂ€(r), tönĂ€(de) #langsky

2025-05-15

Finnish influenced intonation is very audible for a Scandinavian ear. KAJ's VörÄ has less of that than e.g. Helsinki, but more than South-Ostrobotnia, where you find NÀrpes. Yet, the only dialect with documented lexical accent is found southwest of Helsinki. #langsky www.academia.edu/48282723/Var...

2025-05-15

Swedish dialects in Finland are influenced by Finnish, and loanwords (& calques) occur, different ones for different dialects. Some are old & well nativised; "HeittÀÀ" in this line is not one of them, as seen from the long vowel-harmonic ending -ÀÀ. Incidental loans occurs in free speech!đŸ‘‡đŸ» #langsky

2025-05-15

For experts in Norwegian phonology: We gain nothing by assuming "short" diphthongs to avoid assuming overlength. AFAIK the diphthong in "heit" 'hot' (m/f) is indistinguishable from that in "heitt" 'hot' (nt). And there is no difference in length between "heitt" and "le:tt" 'light'. #langsky

2025-05-15

”heittÀÀ pĂ„ sĂ„ sveittin bara yr” Here ”sveittin” marks the genuine dialect, with an Old Nordic diphthong and an overlong syllable, since shortened in the main Scandinavian languages. And -in instead of -en. The Finnish ”heittĂ€Ă€â€ ’throw’ raises the issue of Finnish influence and borrowingsđŸ‘‡đŸ» #langsky

2025-05-14

Even if this VörĂ„ /u/ by KAJ (pro /É”/) co-incidentally resembles the Ancient Nordic */u/ from which it originates, its distribution on the map and in the vocabulary suggests that contact with Finnish made it merge with /u/ in ”bonde”. #langsky #eurovision2025

2025-05-14

”hundra grader nĂ„jaa” In VörĂ„ short <u> sounds like a German <u> ”hundert”, a French <ou> ”ouvert” or a Swedish <o> ”bonde”, but unlike [É”] in ”hundra”, with its rounded central vowel. This /É”/-/u/-merger occurs in two areas on Finland’s coast, mutually apart & flanked by non-merger areas.đŸ‘‡đŸ» #langsky

2025-05-14

Over and again KAJ uses the expletive pronoun "e". In a periferal arc of dialectal East Nordic descendants of "he" replaces the Swedish pronoun "det". It has been suggested that like in Faroese an initial "th-" would have been lost, but I believe it comes from Old Nordic deictic "hitt". #langsky

The genesis of this ”L” is not fully understood, but at least for nearly a millennium it has been part of a north & central Scandinavian consonant inventory, likely contrastive with alveolar ”l” in the area. Foreign influence on urban speech suppressed it. #langsky www.youtube.com/watch?v=c70I...
