A printed vintage postcard of the Grand Menhir Brisé at Locmariaquer in Brittany. The menhir is, or was, about 23 metres or 75 feet in length and weighs approximately 350 tons. It fell at an unknown date and lies broken into four pieces. It is reputed to be the largest menhir in the world. A young girl in traditional Breton costume stands in front of the closest piece. The town can be seen in the distance. The stone sits within a large complex of prehistoric monuments: the Er Grah tumulus and La Table des Marchands are very close by, and Gavrinis is fairly close, and it may possibly have originally been one of 19 menhirs forming a stone row, the holes for which can still be seen.

A vintage postcard showing the Table des Marchands, a prehistoric chambered tomb at Locmariaquer in Brittany, construced in about 4000BC. A young girl sits on the enormous 65 ton capstone while an even younger couple of children are to the side. The stones on the inside of the chamber and the underside of the capstone are carved with several ornate petroglyphs. The monument has now been restored and looks very different today.

Printed semi-modern postcard showing the Pierres Plates dolmen at Locmariaquer in Morbihan, Brittany. An angled passage grave with several sculpted stones which lies at the end of the Locmariaquer peninsular overlooking Quiberon Bay. Part of the mound remains and the long chamber turns at about 45° part of the way down, and has a side chamber at the angle. From here another 10m of passage leads to the main chamber. A few scattered houses around Kerere can be seen in the distance.

🐕🐥🦣🐸Nach dem Frühstück fiel die Entscheidung, wohin es gehen soll. Zum größten #Menhir der Bretagne! Der steht aber nicht mehr, sondern liegt in vier Stücken am Boden. Daneben gibt es ein Steingrab und eine weitere große Steinanlage. Archäologen haben herausgefunden, dass diese Anlagen aus der Steinzeit (4.-6.Jt vChr) datieren und mit den Kelten nichts zu tun haben.

Le menhir de Mein Er Mere est étendu au centre de l'image, horizontalement. Il est couvert d'algues. La mer est basse et le menhir est pourtant à moitié couvert d'eau. Au fond, le golfe du Morbihan et quelques bateaux.

Locmariaquer is a Stone Age site in north-west France distinguished by its two large stone tombs and massive granite standing stone or menhir. The monumental structures, all built within metres of each other, were built in the 5th millennium BCE by the local sedentary farming community and are amongst the most impressive Neolithic monuments anywhere.
