maimai DX - United States debut

maimai Deluxe has just started rolling out across American Round 1 branches. The ones in Southern California got them first, and this past week in the SF Bay Area, Round 1's branches in San Jose (Eastridge Shopping Center) and Hayward (Southland Mall) have started getting them as well. After some hiccups that caused them to only be running offline, Eastridge's cabs are now online.

For those not aware, maimai is a rhythm game in the same vein as stuff like DanceDanceRevolution, Guitar Hero, and beatmania. Players hit buttons on rim of the touchscreen to hit notes that emerge from the center of the screen, occasionally pressing notes that are on the screen itself or dragging their hands to complete "slide" notes. The game has over 1,100 songs, some original, some from other SEGA games, some of them popular Japanese pop songs or Vocaloid songs.

I visited yestrday, the day Eastridge got their cabs online. We had maybe 8-12 players queued up at any one time, and someone brought a whiteboard for the queue and to list off player etiquette, considering the kind of audience this game might bring.

Right now, there are some known issues with making sure this game is a smooth experience.

First of all, daily server maintenance happens at the same time as Asia Pacific region. This means that for us in Pacific Daylight Time, it is at 12:00-15:00 (11:00-14:00 once DST ends). This is likely going to be worse for East Coast players, since maintenance occurs 15:00-18:00 for them (14:00-17:00 once DST ends).

Second, it seems the staff at this R1 do not fully understand how this game's network functions work. The game automatically reboots at the end of server maintenance, and if a credit is in play when maintenance ends, the reboot occurs once that credit is over. One of the staff had assumed that a customer had rebooted the game without staff permission, and we had to clarify that this wasn't the case.

Finally, this game requires cotton gloves (no specific kind, just ordinary cotton gloves) in order to painlessly complete the "slide" notes in this game. I have played this game without gloves in the past, when I started playing 9 years ago, and it is not pleasant. I am not sure if American gamers who aren't already aware of this game would be receptive to having to buy gloves to play effectively. Then again, maybe this will not be too big of a concern - I see Drummania players play by bringing their own drumsticks instead of using the ones attached to the cab, DDR players coming here like they're coming to the gym (gym shorts, water bottle, portable fan, towel, etc), and so forth.

All of this said, I hope this game succeeds, I feel like it is just as capable of being a viral hit like it has been in many Asian countries for the last 10+ years.
