Underrated legacy from our time as Hindu-Buddhists: having the word pahala because the strugglebus all non-Arabic-speaking Muslims have in talking about, well, pahala, in a concise manner.

![Writing a Historical Novel from the Perspective of a Singaporean-Malay: A Discussion on "Neverness"
13 November 2024, 4pm
This event features a discussion on Neverness, a historical novel by Fairoz Ahmad. Steeped in beauty and loss, the story is set in late 1970s Singapore, during the dying days of the once major Malay village of Engku Aman. Described by literary scholar Philip Holden as a “powerful excavation of the hidden histories of a kampung near Geylang Serai” and filmmaker Tan Pin Pin as “absorbing [and] evocative”, the novel recounts the disappearance of a 15 year old Malay girl, the fading away of friendships and the unstoppable rise of Malay rock music with the emergence of its first influential rock band. Blending music, history and storytelling, Fairoz will discuss the major themes of the book, and the role historical novels can play in preserving cultural memory and, as social commentary. The presentation will also feature a music performance by graduate student Ilya Kamsani (vocalist) and Mohd Sulaiman Shah (guitarist) who will play songs referenced in the book. Fairoz will also share how these songs are maps of meanings for the characters in the book, and their socio-cultural significance. Fairoz Ahmad works at the intersection of strategy and social impact. For his contributions to community development, he was awarded the National University of Singapore’s Outstanding Young Alumni Award (2017) and United Kingdom’s Commonwealth Point of Light Award (2018).](https://files.mastodon.social/cache/media_attachments/files/113/448/070/631/576/976/small/145ff5c8145b54b5.jpg)
