In 2017 I started exploring meditation to combat the storm of anxiety in my head from years of addiction and emotional imbalance. As an artist I started creating mandalas.

At the time I remember feeling like I had discovered something magical, something ancient and secret. Still and silent it resonated with a great energy and wisdom. It was like staring, hypnotically into a great eye, an iris radiating fire from an infinite depth.

The contemplation of the finished mandala provided a sense of something quite complete or whole, more than just beautiful decoration. The almost neurographical process that I use to create a mandala is like putting a puzzle of many different pieces together until a sense of symmetria or harmony is achieved.

It's no wonder that the mandala has been used across time by all cultures and civilizations as a diagram of the way things are. The mandala speaks to the order of things when chaos seemingly reigns. It's a micro cosmic wayfinder through the unconscious sea when one is lost.

I've been experimenting with some older work running them through various mirror filter levels to see how they turn out. I think I like this version better than the original in the initial post.

Mandalic pattern with an Art Nouveau style that utilizes a twelve point axis. Colourful organic shapes emerge from the centre and outwards representing stylized foliage and other flowing ornamental forms. The colours throughout consist of greens, yellows, oranges, blues with black shading, details and outlines. It floats in a background of black space.

I'm not really sure where to begin with this but I think/feel that I need to tell my story here otherwise I don't really see much point. It's for my own sake really but if it also helps others, or people find it interesting and deeper connections are formed then that's even better.

I've been stuck for some time contemplating how I want to present my artwork. I want this space to be more than just a cold, sterile gallery wall. It has been an inward journey of self-reflection, discovery, transformation and healing. The mandala really is a powerful tool and my hope is that others might benefit from creating, colouring and contemplating them as I have.

I started making mandalas in 2017. I have always had a fascination with symmetry, pattern and ornamentation. What inspired my first mandala was an old blue ballpoint pen drawing I did of a face with a tribal style tattoo image on it. I used to use this image as my avatar back in the old forum days. It's only a little sketch but formed part of a number of drawings I did roughly 30 years ago that I termed 'Inner Self-Portraits'. Not realistic in any way but more subconscious representations.

I eventually re-drew the tattoo part of the sketch in an early version of Adobe Illustrator. Many years later this became the main element I used in my first mandala.

Hi #portfolioday people. Nice to meet you.

I'm a Graphic Artist that resides mainly in the digital realm these days playing with vector nodes and pixels but I have been known paint and draw traditionally on occasion. I am hoping to be able to summon the energy to start drawing with pencil and paper again more routinely this year. Painting is also on the agenda once I have the space again.

This is a small sample of some old work ranging from 2017 to 2024 but I have a few years of unfinished work to deal with before I start sharing anything new.

I've been contemplating the idea of publishing some of my work physically or making them available as prints or to colour so stay tuned if you're interested.
