Why You Can't Bring Checkerboards to Math Exams
[A Chess Board Abacus is a Binary Calculator]

@WrathofMath _ https://youtu.be/_Qe_0aj4eEM
"A chessboard and a set of counters makes a formidable calculation device. This is from the final part of John Napier's treatise called Rabdologia, or Rabdology. He called it 'Location Arithmetic as Performed on a Chessboard'. This method of using counters on a chessboard is based on binary and basic algebraic properties, and with only sliding counters on a chessboard we can perform multiplication, division, and square roots, even square roots of irrationals. #maths #mathtricks #mathematics"

I was intrigued by a question lnkd.in/dz7FcEXg, which looked quite complex at first sight, at least to most of the young and novice Maths learners. Although, it isn't tough, students should attack it with the right approach, to find the solution. #students #maths #mathstricks #mathsisfun #mathclass #mathisfun #mathslover #mathskills #mathstudents #mathstutor #mathproblems #matheducation #mathematics #mathslover #mathtricks #math #learning #quizoftheday #solutions #skilldevelopment

Perhaps Mathstodon can be a place to note some folklore #MathTricks that are useful but too trifling to devote an entire paper to. Here's one (that I recalled on browsing MathOverflow mathoverflow.net/questions/435): If one is trying to prove a Hilbert space identity or inequality which is invariant under a unitary group action, one can often reduce "for free" to the irreducible components of that group action.
