Indeed, the Gulls were quite persistent, and while most of the other Seals generally ignored them or shoo-ed them off, this young mom refused to come ashore with her newborn for almost 2 hours, rather than confront them.

In talking to one of the local volunteers at the Rookery, he mentioned that while pups were generally fine with water births, most of the local seals prefer to pup on the beach. His speculation was this was a young mom, perhaps her 1st time, as she was very nervous about the Seagulls who had congregated in the area (to feed on the afterbirth, etc.) and had been going to great lengths to avoid them all morning, eventually pupping in the water.

Davenport Landing Beach, California, is a very simple spot, with a small set of restrooms, a few benches, and a children’s swing set. It had been lightly raining prior to our arrival and everything was poised in that moment between the breaking of the storm and arrival of blue skies and calm.

Caught this shot of a Brown Pelican skimming the waves in Pacific Grove CA while taking pics of the Harbor Seal pups nearby. The len's ability to keep a focus lock on a moving target is impressive.
