#nRF9160

This is big news today from Nordic Semiconductor! The #nRF9151 is here, which is a drop-in replacement for the #nRF9161 and #nRF9160 (albeit with a 20% smaller footprint) with all the amazing features, but that adds Class 5 output power which even further reduces power-consumption.

This is a small lecture I gave to a team of students on how to approach designing the software architecture for a #cellularIoT project.

It uses the Nordic #nRF9160 as a habit tracker in a 12 sided enclosure and connects to AWS IoT.

In the talk I speak about:
- design considerations
- how to separate work between three teams
- make sure the project is aligned with the user's goals
- how end-to-end tests support integration between teams

That's an interesting idea: use #WeWebAssembly for embedded #IoT devices:
thenewstack.io/why-webassembly
The benefit would be a clearer separation between application code and the operating system, and would allow users to develop the application that runs on a device in their preferred language, and not forced to write in low-level embedded languages like C/C++.
Runtimes like github.com/bytecodealliance/wa are only 135 KB (plus the operating system) and could fit a #NordicSemiconductor #nRF9160.

GNSS-interferometry folks! So I've been working on programming firmware for the Actinius
Icarus #nrf9160 board stacked with a @adafruit
featherwing datalogger, and I'm getting really close to deploying this thing in the wild. Have a look at the current state here: github.com/ITC-Water-Resources

Another showcase that is using the demo application I have been building the last weeks is used here to demonstrate a #NordicSemiconductor #nRF9160 connected to the internet without a physical SIM, using the #Onomondo #SoftSIM!

@schiermi @chris_gammell This is the guide that covers what has significant influence on the power consumption of the #nRF9160: developer.nordicsemi.com/nRF_C

The biggest cost is using the modem, so the less frequent you send data the better.

We recently did measurement with the asset_tracker_v2 sample for CES 2023 and the solar demo we showed, and arrived at 3.4 mA average if you send data to the cloud every minute, and 2.3 mA if you do it every hour.

@rdmueller Exeger demoed this at CES this months, so it's quite new. I am not aware that the shields can be purchased, right now, but Powerfoyle itself is available and you can order a DevKit at exeger.com/sign-in/.

In good conditions we get over 4.5mA which is enough to send data to the cloud every minute using the #nrf9160

Our latest tutorial using @UsefulSensors Person sensor with @NordicTweets #nRF9160 and @ZephyrIoT RTOS demonstrates how to:
-use I2C API of ZephyrOS to write your own driver.
-fetch face-detection data from person sensor.
-develop your own #MachineLearning models.

@chris_gammell good video! The floor that's shown in the video (of 24 mA) is quite high. With the #nRF9160 we can typically get it down to around 5 mA. I think Nordic need to be better at showing how that's achievable.

It's absolutely 🤯 that they put a #nRF9160 in a 2 mm thin label with a printed battery that can be attached to a box to provide tracking for up to 6 months. Really impressive #engineering!
