Didn't realise Nolto was just an experiment but the uptake proves there is an interest to have an alternative to LinkedIn.

Screenshot).

Nolto.Social is gone, but is has shown the Demand!

Nolto.social started as a small experiment as a free alternative to LinkedIn. The author wanted to explore ActivityPub and see what could be built. There was no funding, no team, no roadmap. Just an idea and some time.

@FinchHaven @zockbursche
isn't the preexisting user base *the* thing where the #Fediverse makes the difference? No need to bring all the users on your platform, as they can interact without having an account on that specific platform to start with.
I still think something like #Nolto would make a great addition to the Fediverse and I really hope someone picks up the idea (maybe not the code).

Nolto lukket: It was never meant to grow

A very fresh is shutting down after a few weeks operation. The lonely creator received rather unfair, irrealistic and personal attacks. That's too bad.

On the other hand, this is a useful experience. As a non-programmer, he started the development using . In such a critical production code, this is probably not really helpful. is a debated approach even if used by experienced teams.

I feel bad for the guy anyhow.

@FinchHaven fully agree on this.

One more thing: Projects that start with "let's build xyz but federated" skip the initial whiteboard phase. LinkedIn is over 20 years old. Is this still the answer to business networking in the web? By just implementing a clone we miss a great opportunity here.

@zockbursche

"The code of Nolto is still available but it is questionable if it can be a foundation for a reliable platform."

The problem as I see it (and we're seeing it again now with Discord and previously with Pixelfed &c &c &c) is that people are looking for a replacement for a software platform with an extended history and a well-established critical mass

Neither any Discord replacement nor any Linkedin replacement can have that history and pre-existing critical mass -- they're brand new

So it's not "Can I code a Linkedin replacement, maybe throwing in a little AI for spice in my spare time?" but will there be anyone waiting for me to participate when someone new gets on

That's what's missing: not the functionality, but the preexisting user base

Being a pioneer is a lonely bit of work, either as a dev *or* as a user

If someone is going to create something like this in the future I just hope we all do better in communication.

If you create something and it is a small untested side-project, it should be transparently presented as such. Don't claim it to be something production-ready. Time is precious. Don't make people spend theirs in something you are not going to maintain. And be realistic about your time as well. We only have so much of it.

Be nice to each other. The Fediverse thrives on people, not on corporations.

Then, it seems there is indeed a demand for a federated business network. JTensetti wrote: "Within a few weeks, almost a thousand people signed up." So maybe there really is a place for such a project. On the other hand, 1000 is not much, so the question remains open.

For those interested, I previously posted a survey on this topic: social.tchncs.de/@zockbursche/

I very much appreciate the work of JTensetti. Even if it was AI-assisted and maybe badly communicated we should welcome anyone willing to spend his free time in building something for the fediverse.

But in the end it didn't work out. So what can we learn from this?

There is a story about AI here. And as many pointed out before, AI can help to build something shine very fast. But it is crucial to monitor closely what your bot is doing. You need to unterstand and review it if it is going to be more than just a personal little side project or proof-of-concept. The code of Nolto is still available but it is questionable if it can be a foundation for a reliable platform.

🧵

First, the Fediverse is a particular AI-sceptic space. That doesn't help to promote your project here if it relies so much on AI.

But more important, AI helped to make Nolto to look far more mature than it really was:

On a surface level, the platform looked ready-to-use. It even had a mascot (a pretty cute "mastodonish" one). But there were a lot of issues and open ends, including security concerns. This is normal for proof-of-concept state projects. However this was not apparent to the users who, given the shiny website, anticipated a more robust platform.

I feel like there might be also a communication problem. Hard to say now as I cannot find any active Fediverse account belonging to JTensetti anymore and as Nolto has been shut down, a lot may be lost there.

So it looks like the federated LinkedIn alternative Nolto has been discontinued by its creator, Jonatan Tensetti.

Over the past few weeks, I've followed discussions surrounding this project a little. I've never created an account but I read the source code and also created an issue.

Initially, there was a lot of excitement as many found the idea to have an open, federated LinkedIn alternative intriguing.

But very soon, people started to raise concerns. The developer did not just use "a little AI" but it was primarily driven by lovable.app.

As I mentioned before, the AI bot contributed 10x commits and 30x lines of code compared to the human developer. This posed two issues: 🧵

Nolto was never meant to grow.

It started as a small experiment. I was curious about ActivityPub and wanted to see what I could build. There was no funding, no team, no roadmap. Just an idea and some time.

Within a few weeks, almost a thousand people signed up. Companies created pages. Articles were posted. Events were shared. I never marketed it. It spread through blogs and word of mouth.

I built Nolto with the help of AI. I am not a professional developer and I have never run a large open source project before. That does not automatically make a project unsafe. It simply means it was built differently.

As the platform grew, the criticism grew too. Some of it was fair and helpful. Some of it was not. Some of it became personal. Projects like Flockingbird have gone through similar experiences. Small, independent efforts can quickly be treated as if they were fully staffed institutions.

Nolto was never that. It was one person building something interesting to see what would happen.

At this point I have decided to shut it down.

You can log in and download your data. Nothing else on the platform will remain active. The site now exists only for data export.

All user data will be permanently deleted in 29 days, including the database and stored files. After that, the backend will be removed entirely.

The source code will remain available for anyone who wants to explore it, improve it, fork it or continue the idea.
