Culture change is not an abstract policy conversation. It lives in everyday practice, how we work with each other, how we share knowledge, and how we make decisions that have real impact on real lives.

Louise reminded the room that open research is not just infrastructure or compliance. It is trust, care, and responsibility. If we want systematic change, we have to look at how we relate to our colleagues, partners, and communities. That is where change takes root.

This zine we displayed at NORFest National Open Research Forum at the Royal Irish Academy came from one of our ENGAGED collective intelligence workshops. It asks a simple question that kept coming up. How do we build real capacity for open research. Not just awareness or policy alignment. Actual capacity to do things differently.

People told us capacity is built through time, support, shared practice, and genuine collaboration. It needs space to learn together, not just instructions handed down. It needs resourcing that recognises culture change is real work, not something extra squeezed in on top.

Systematic change doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when we commit to working side by side and keep at it.

This zine we displayed at NORFest National Open Research Forum at the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) came from one of our ENGAGED Open Research and Public Engagement Roadmap collective intelligence workshops. It reflects something people said again and again. We can’t shift research culture on our own. We need to act together and show up for one another.

Researchers, partners, and communities are often working in isolation. Even when they share the same values. Even when they want the same outcomes. So change feels slow and heavy.

This zine is a reminder that culture change is not a policy exercise. It’s people choosing to collaborate, support each other, and back the work that aligns with shared values. It’s practical. It’s relational. It’s ongoing.

Time for change, yes. But also, time to do that change side by side.

It surfaced a truth that many researchers and community partners feel but rarely say out loud. Research often stays locked inside institutions. Hidden behind language, norms, and expectations that make it hard for people outside academia to participate, contribute, or benefit.

Research out of the closet is a call to step outside those walls. To work in public. To build trust, not just outputs. To be changed by the people and communities we work with.

True academic freedom can be forged in the wider communities we serve, not just in conference rooms and journal pages.

A manifesto for open research. This zine came from a collective intelligence workshop where participants spoke honestly about what open research needs to be, not just what it claims to be.

It reminds us that openness is not only about access and transparency. It is also about culture, care, relationships, and the responsibility to share knowledge in ways that include rather than exclude. We all have a lot to learn, and that learning has to happen with people and communities, not just within institutions.

Action. Follow through. Listening that leads to change, not just notes and minutes.

Research is an action verb when it is done with people rather than at them. These workshops surfaced real barriers that community partners face.
