The image depicts a traditional Japanese castle, characterized by its multi-tiered roofs and white walls. It is set against a blue sky, and there are a few trees and people in the foreground. The castle appears to be situated on a stone foundation or wall, suggesting historical significance. The setting looks serene and is likely part of a park or public area.

Fortunately the rains held off when we visited Enoura Observatory in Odawara about a month ago.
Built on a hill with steep slopes amongst citrus groves, there were notices that the narrow, unsurfaced paths to some of the art installations might be closed for safety in times of bad weather.
There was much more to see than the website suggested and it took us a couple of hours to cover most of the site.

Photo of Enoura Observatory, Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.
A grassy hillside with a scattering of bushes slopes down towards a calm sea. The backs of a couple of visitors walking single file can be seen in the foreground on a winding path running down the hillside. In the mid-ground, the rusty, angular end of the winter solstice sunrise corridor juts out of the hillside alongside a glass stage from the right of the photo. In the background, a forest-covered promontory extends out to sea near the centre of the photo. The skies are cloudy.

Stumbled upon the Yamayasu Turnpike Store in Odawara, Kanagawa Pref., whilst en route to the Suzuhiro Kamaboko Village.
Unusual architecture certainly did a good eye-catching job!
Stocked up on dried aji (アジ= Japanese horse mackerel) caught locally and American-sourced dried hokke (ホッケ=Okhostk Atka mackerel) from the freezer cabinets.

Ok, so the train from #Takamatsu to #Kotohira / #Kompira is a private line, not a JR line, and the station is next to what used to be a castle moat. And as I said about #Odawara castle: if your moat isn’t big enough to hold swimming competitions in, what even are you doing?

So, yeah, maybe on my next trip to Japan I’ll try to schedule a full day to go through #Odawara castle PROPERLY. Oh, and maybe spend some time for shits and giggles at the nearby “interactive Ninja museum” 8/8 #CherryBlossoms2025

The rest of the exhibitions seem to be well curated and focused on putting #Odawara castle in historical context as the finale of the #SengokuJidai. i.e: not just “this was important” but “this is WHY this castle and the Hojo family MATTERED”. That’s good, that’s very good. 7/n

Now, I was hampered by time constraints and couldn’t really sit down to watch them all, but #Odawara castle has multiple (at least 3) re-enactment films with HIGH production values and from what I saw GOOD English subtitles. 6/n

… go ALL IN on the modern museum experience. Which is what #Odawara castle has done, and done BRILLIANTLY well from what I saw. 5/n

2025-04-03

That’s NOT a criticism of any of the three BTW - #Odawara castle, #warrior, and #mikasa are all brilliant in their own ways (and yes I’ll be visiting Mikasa again later) 3/n

2025-04-03

Ok, given the tendency of Japanese castles to burn down frequently, it shouldn’t be a huge surprise that the current iteration of #odawara castle is a 1960 restoration. So pretty much like #warrior and #mikasa in terms of “original” content. 2/n

Ok, since I’m now sitting on the #shinkansen platform, some thoughts on #Odawara castle. 1/n

Ok, so THIS thing? Apparently this isn’t the castle, it’s a gate… #odawara

I mean, I’m sorry, but if the moat of your castle isn’t big enough for swimming competitions, what are you even doing? #Odawara

Paraphrasing Crocodile Dundee… Nah, that little ditch isn’t a moat, THIS is a moat… #odawara

Since I have a couple of hours in #Odawara and it’s in walking distance…
