The art of our time is noisy with appeals for silence. A coquettish, even cheerful nihilism. One recognizes the imperative of silence, but goes on speaking anyway. Discovering that one has nothing to say, one seeks a way to say that.

“Don’t be afraid of the clocks, they are our time, time has been generous to us.

We are synchronized, now and forever.
I love you.”

Don’t be afraid of the clocks, they are our time, the time has been so generous to us. We imprinted time with the sweet taste of victory. We conquered fate by meeting at a certain TIME in a certain space. We are a product of the time, therefore we give back credit where it is due: time. We are synchronized, now forever. I love you.

I am reduced to a thing that wants Virginia. I composed a beautiful letter to you in the sleepless nightmare hours of the night, and it has all gone: I just miss you, in a quite simple desperate human way. You, with all your un-dumb letters, would never write so elementary phrase as that; perhaps you wouldn’t even feel it. And yet I believe you’ll be sensible of a little gap. But you’d clothe it in so exquisite a phrase that it would lose a little of its reality. Whereas with me it is quite stark: I miss you even more than I could have believed; and I was prepared to miss you a good deal. So this letter is just really a squeal of pain. It is incredible how essential to me you have become. I suppose you are accustomed to people saying these things. Damn you, spoilt creature; I shan’t make you love me any the more by giving myself away like this—But oh my dear, I can’t be clever and stand-offish with you: I love you too much for that.

You mentioned spring's delaying — I blamed her for the opposite.

"Friday I tasted life. It was a vast morsel. A circus passed the house —still I feel the red in my mind though the drums are out.

The book you mention, I have not met. Thank you for tenderness.

The lawn is full of south and the odors tangle, and I hear to-day for the first the river in the tree.
You mentioned spring’s delaying —I blamed her for the opposite. I would eat evanescence slowly.

Vinnie is deeply afflicted in the death of her dappled cat, though I convince her it is immortal which assists her some. Mother resumes lettuce, involving my transgression —suggestive of yourself, however, which endears disgrace.

'House' is being 'cleaned.' I prefer pestilence. That is more classic and less fell."

"Avec ma main brûlée, j'ai le droit maintenant d'écrire des phrases sur la nature du feu.”

“With my burnt hand, I now have the right to write a few words on the nature of fire,” wrote Flaubert to his lover Louise Colet.

In Ingeborg Bachmann, the phrase reappears with a crucial excision. Writing from pain, but not asserting one's right to do so. “With my burnt hand, I write on the nature of fire.”

I know that I am cowardly, and am unable to act. Therefore I confine myself to words. But I don't think that my words are without purpose. Someone else will act. But my many words - the words of a coward - will make it easier for that person to act.
My words clear the ground.

Hard times are coming, when we’ll be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now, can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine real grounds for hope.

“Imagine an iron house, with absolutely no windows, indestructible, with many people asleep inside who will soon die of suffocation…Would you think you are doing them a good turn [by waking them before they perish]?”

“But if a few awake, you can’t say there is no hope.”

"Imagine an iron house, with absolutely no windows, indestructible, with many people fast asleep inside who will soon die of suffocation. But since they will die in their sleep, you may be sure that they will not feel the pain of death. Now if you frantically shout and rouse a few of those who might be closer to consciousness, you will cause those unfortunate few to suffer the irrevocable agony of death. Would you think you are doing them a good turn?"

"But if a few awake, you can't say there is no hope of destroying the iron house."

True, I had my convictions. Yet I could not erase all possibility of hope, for hope lies in the future. I could not rely on my own present evidence in its lack, to refute his assertion that it might exist one day. And so I agreed to write for them, and the result was my first story, “A Madman's Diary.”

In 1918 Lu Xun was already 37, hardly 'new youth.' But the revolutionary urgency of his prose defined the May4th generation.

In the preface to his short story collection 吶喊 (Call to Arms), he recounts being asked to write for "La Jeunesse," and he demurred, saying:

"Imagine an iron house..." (full quote in image and alt)

Founded by Chen Duxiu (also co-founder of the Chinese Communist Party) in 1915, 新青年 La Jeunesse, later renamed 'New Youth,’ became the foundational journal of the New Culture Movement. This May 1918 issue was a first: all in vernacular Chinese.

Included in this issue of 'La Jeunesse' was, of course, the first publication of Lu Xun's 魯迅 "A Madman's Diary" 狂人日記, considered the inaugural work of modern Chinese literature.
