My project #ONI, has quickly become my favourite way to follow media focused fediverse accounts.
It has no fancy features, no carousels, no cool transitions, but it gives me a full page listing of lazily loaded images that I can check out at my heart's content.
The aggressive media caching that Mastodon pushes makes no sense to me, the internet was built on linking to remote content. Do it respectfully, yes, allow your browser and intermediary proxies to do the caching for you, but keep linking... Caching everything locally is a symptom of VC monoculture mentality that infected the fediverse, and in my opinion is misguided.

I am becoming more and more frustrated with how Mastodon behaves towards the #ActivityPub ecosystem.
After I finish with the current plans I have for GoActivityPub I have to push into making #ONI good enough to be used as a daily driver fediverse profile and switch to that.
I'm not entirely sure the inbox model of social consumption is good enough for others, but I think for me it'll have to be enough.

La etimología de la palabra oni se deriva de la lectura on-yomi del carácter chino "on" (隠), que significa "ocultar" o "esconderse". Durante el periodo Heian (794-1185), los oni eran concebidos como entidades espirituales invisibles responsables de desastres naturales, enfermedades y desgracias, basándose en la creencia de que estos seres acechaban en los límites de la percepción humana.
La apariencia icónica del oni —piel roja o azul, cuernos y taparrabos de piel de tigre— es un desarrollo posterior influenciado por la cosmología budista y la geomancia china (Onmyōdō). Según esta tradición, la dirección noreste es conocida como la "Puerta del Demonio" (Kimon), asociada con los signos del zodiaco del Tigre (piel de tigre) y el Buey (cuernos), lo que terminó definiendo la anatomía visual de la criatura en el imaginario popular.
Históricamente, estos seres pasaron de ser espíritus abstractos a convertirse en los guardianes y torturadores del Jigoku (infierno budista), bajo el mando de Enma Daiō, el juez de los muertos. A pesar de su naturaleza violenta, en diversas regiones de Japón se les rinde culto como deidades protectoras capaces de ahuyentar otros males, demostrando la dualidad espiritual que caracteriza al folclore japonés.
