We love to see open source sustainability efforts like Sentry's Open Source Pledge! blog.sentry.io/we-just-gave-75

I really like the idea behind opensourcepledge.com/ - but it strikes me, that almost all of the members so far, are tooling companies.
Do "normal" companies not have the same interest in keeping the open source ecosystem healthy?
I can see that $2k/year might be a bit much for some companies - is the entry too high?

🚧 SF ads call out tech firms for not paying for open source
— The Register

「 The signs are the work of the Open Source Pledge – a group that launched earlier this month. It asks businesses that make use of open source code to pledge $2,000 per developer to support projects that develop the code. So far, 25 companies have signed up – but project co-founder Chad Whitacre wants bigger firms to pay their dues, too 」

@dunglas I agree the contribution system suggested by is somehow too restrictive.

Your company structure could use a percentage of net benefit and that would be great because it better fits into your current budget and isn't necessarily dependent on the number of devs you have, but rather the success of the company's business

Why is the contribution a multiple of the number of developers in the company and not of the total number of employees?

End-users of open-source projects, sales people, support teams, HR etc. benefit as much, if not more, from FOSS than developers.

Delighted that the company I work for, #Tideways, is so transparent (and active) with its open-source contributions.

We also joined the #OpenSourcePledge initiative:

This year also had a lot of #PHP core contributions that I'm excited about :)

Awesome to see HTTP Toolkit in Times Square for yesterday's launch of the Open Source Pledge!

Amazing work from the whole OSS Pledge team (opensourcepledge.com), and it's great to be part of this first wave of incredible companies committing to supporting open source devs.

Every modern business—whether they know it or not—relies on Open Source software, yet few give back. The PHP Foundation celebrates the #OpenSourcePledge, whose members have committed to correcting this imbalance. Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient OSS ecosystem. 🌱
