Last min shopping I got these 3 celery stalks for 60yen (I don't understand pricing in #Japan) so between that (&other ingredients - bell peppers, smoked ham) and the ½ cooked black soybeans that I realized I didn't want to make all sweet kuromame style, made #Japanese eHoppin' John - e for ersatz of course

Square box set kobumaki and kuri kinton yellow paste with chestnuts were not good - the store specialty vendor version (that we tasted prior to buying) was terrific (see bowl in 👆🏽). Herring roe (bought) is mostly just crunchy.
The tamago with dashi should have been left in the bamboo roller -I didn't as I didn't want it to smell, so the traditional marks weren't there (and I couldn't press it back into the cold tamago)

Store bought 4 square box as reference, then home made + store items. My kuromame came out quite ok! Some wrinkly bits but decent (yes I did put the best looking ones on top) - the yuzu really makes it. The salmon kobumaki was a big hit. I've made tazukiri before - this one didn't quite turn out that good (store one wasn't great either).
