I had to save-scum earlier, and it highlights one problem in ONI I've never found a good solution for.

How to send material gathered from a very cold biome or a very hot biome and properly process it to a desired temperature, while still preventing construction tasks from trying to use it.

It's like I need something like a "geographically limited high-priority conveyor loader".

You could do it in one of the ice biomes in a classic start, but ice biomes, tho more plentiful in classic than SO, are still precious, and not usually big enough.

The space biome would last 100s of cycles, and I'll be able to get an actively cooled system as soon as I scare up about 3 tons of steel.

This is a clever build that would really only be viable on a spaced out start. (I liberated the concept, not the actual implementation.)

Baby's first metal refinery.

We have a liquid reservoir, then the metal refinery, then a second liquid reservoir, then a cooling loop through the space biome.

Why only possible in a SO start? Cuz that space biome is *enormous*, and it's all at -55c. In a classic start, there's less of it and it's not that cold.

An Oxygen Not Included Screenshot: Way up in the space biome, the first metal refinery sits with liquid reservoirs on either side. The first one serves as a buffered supply for the input. The second serves as buffer for a cooling loop. The cooling loop is nothing but running a few radiant pipes through some mechanical airlocks, with a liquid temperature sensor that keeps the liquid in the loop until it's cool enough to put back in the first reservoir.

I also immediately put the (30c) ph2o to use. The claymator build on the lower left of the picture is creating enough o2 for about 8 dupes. We'll build another before too long.

Immediate next project once the salt geyser is capped and tapped: adding two more floors to the base, where that small jungle biome has been cleared but not emptied of gas yet.

c80. Very little has changed inside the base, so no pic for that. The interesting stuff has happened above the base area.

We've capped & tapped 3 of the 4 liquid geysers. Simple box-with-pump to get it out of there and stash in the two infinistores below.

We'll do the same for the salt slush geyser.

I plan to make a rather large wild sleet wheat farm, left of the ladder in the space biome, and then my metal refinery. The cold will help a lot.

An Oxygen Not Included Screenshot: The upper third of the starting asteroid. A ladder is drawn all the way up to space. To the lower left, a claymator is turning sand and ph2o into clay and o2. There's a small jungle biome to the right of the ladder just below space, it's been cleared, but the gas hasn't been cleaned up yet.

I think I'm going to do the same thing for all four: build minimal box'n'pump and send the output down to some infinistores below the ice biome.

Ultimately, I'll have to build my own wild sleet wheat farm anyway, but no reason to force my hand this early. I don't even have a pip yet.

GeePawHillGeePawHill

Now, something that's unusual, in spaced out or classic either one: there are two *blocked* geysers up there, too. Both of them are ph2o geysers.

That's excellent, as it means we're absolutely set for water for life, cuz you're talking about ~5kg/s of ph2o at 30c.

Still, it's a *little* awkward. My usual "wrap it in an infinistore" won't work for any of those 4 geysters: It would trash the ice biomes too quickly, and we want that wild sleet wheat for a while longer.

GeePawHillGeePawHill
2025-10-04

So this is all pretty standard, very like a classic start, but in this shot we start to see some of the big differences between classic and spaced out starts.

Up at the *top* of asteroid, rather than at random, there are always 1, 2, or 3 ice biomes, then the space biome itself. The ice biomes are guaranteed to hold two cold geysers.

In this shot you can just barely see them left and right: a cool slush and a cool salt slush geyser.

An Oxygen Not Included Screenshot: This is the top of the lefthand ladder from the base. To the left is an ice biome, and to the right is another one. Above is the space biome, containing igneous, ice, and lots of copper, all at ~ -55c.

In addition to the ranches, I've set up my initial shipping depot, mostly concerning itself with ranch support. I automate dropping eggs off to the evolution chamber, and shipping everything else to the main depot. (I also keep a cache of stone hatch eggs laying around, ~20.)

Labor in a ranching build runs high, especially supply, so everything I can automate I will.

c50. This run is going pretty well. I have four hatch ranches, just got my first two stone hatch eggs. I have my drecko ranch laid out, and I even have a pair of dreckos already, *but* I can't put them in the ranch yet, cuz it depends on liquid stacking. I was thinking I'd have to go somewhere else or use brine (currently hard to reach), then it hit me: In a Spaced Out start, there's a dab of crude oil in the dup teleporter room on the floor. So drecko ranch operative, soon.

An Oxygen Not Included Screenshot: The main habitation area, including now four hatch ranches and a drecko ranch coming in to play.

c30. Now the real frame has emerged. I'm thinking census 20, which means two more layers of bedrooms above the upper left, but by the time we need them, we'll be able to make them. On the right, we now have a real bathroom, a medbay, and the first hatch stable. (Water management for the bathroom loop is in the dead space of that hatch stable.)

Next 3 missions all inside the base: 1) a small coalgen until we make room outside, 2) drecko stable, 3) critter processing.

An Oxygen Not Included. This is pretty much as described in the main text. A single tall ladder runs the height of the internal base, which is now somewhat squared off. All the water pools have been dropped in to a single infinistore at the bottom for now. A shorter ladder is headed up to the left of the habitation area.

2025-10-04

c16. You can see we've done quite a bit of digging, with quite a bit more to go. My single project other than the digging is to get all the cool h2o stashed away, so I'm about a third of the way through having an infinistore for that.

By c50, we should have all my usual suspects in place, i.e. hatch ranches, drecko ranch, a finished bathroom. At that point, I expect some Spaced Out differences to come into play.

An Oxygen Not Included Screenshot: the upper left of the starting biome is cleaned and floored (bedrooms to be). The long vertical ladder has gotten longer, and snakes a little on the lower right to a place where an escher waterfall infinistore will soon be.

A couple of hours to kill. Tomorrow, I have to do pomodoros again to get focus and finish some new contents in the Leading Technical Change seminar.

I tried today, and it was kinda so-so. The problem: I came here, had nothing to chatter about, and inadvertently saw a lot of news.

So.

Tonight, a new ONI seed, starting a rarity for me, with a Spaced Out start instead of a Classic start.

SNDST-C-637945312-0-0-D7BT5

Spaced Out start, no story traits turned on.

An Oxygen Not Included Screenshot: The starting biome. The temperate biome looks a little shallow, with only two h2o vacuoles, and seems slightly right-faced. Further exploration will yield more info.

a tight screenshot of a 2 tall x 12 wide small box filled with water, except the last column of 2 blocks is somehow resisting being filled with water, presenting a vertical wall of liquid held back by nothing.

Question for y'all #SystemicGames¹ folks who like multiplayer/#coop games:

How do you logistically manage actually having a co-op, multiplayer playthrough of a complex video-game in your life?

I've always struggled, hard, with satisfying my needs here; not only is it so hard to find people who 1. like complex games, 2. like multiplayer/social gaming, and 3. have time/space/energy to repeatedly return to coop-complex-games … but even if you find such people, I've never been able to figure out a sustainable way to *actually make such a thing happen* consistently enough to progress/explore/build much of anything interesting!

Do y'all have a "complex games night?" A Discord server? Do you schedule, or is it drop-in? Do you play with a partner? Do you play with one friend, or ten?

----

Also, if you *do* know a good place to find such people (esp. queer, or afab, or kink-friendly …), uhhhh, gimmie. 🥺
