Jacob’s Ladder after a light drizzle. Not the sharpest photo, maybe I lost focus because of the beauty. 😉
This year, I discovered thousands of these flowers blooming across our meadow. Jacob’s Ladder (Polemonium caeruleum) is a clump-forming perennial with graceful, ladder-like leaves and clusters of bell-shaped blue to violet flowers. It blooms from May to July and thrives in moist meadows, woodland edges, and wet grasslands, preferring light shade or full sun.
They offer nectar and pollen for bees, bumblebees, and hoverflies, playing a key role in supporting insect diversity. Their presence is often a sign of undisturbed, species-rich habitats.

Prosartes hookeri, fairybells. Wikipedia says, "the inflorescence at the tips of branches produce one to three drooping, hanging flowers which may be hidden in the cover of the large leaves. The flower is bell-shaped with six white to green veiny tepals and six protruding stamens with large anthers". Here we're seeing the cluster of flowers from the side, and several of the much larger leaves are in the frame.Prosartes hookeri, fairybells. Same cluster, viewed from "in front", that is, the stem is receding away from us.Prosartes hookeri, fairybells. A different cluster, wet from rain. The petals become more and more transparent as they get soaked. Here we can see an ant up inside the bell of one of the flowers, presumably after nectar.Polemonium pulcherrimum, jacob's ladder. Rather surprisingly these were growing by the side of the road with no apparent reason to have been planted there, an anomalous patch of blue. We're near ground level, looking straight on into a periwinkle blue flower with purple rays coming form the yellow "eye" in the center. There are many more flowers in all states of development all around it.
