<p>In almost every collection of paintings from before 1900, you’ll come across works bearing mystifying titles like <em>Tancred Baptizing Clorinda.</em> Those names don’t come from mythology, nor are they Biblical. I suspect that most just abandon trying to read that painting, and pass on by.</p>

<p>In about 1585, Domenico Tintoretto, son of the famous Jacopo, painted just that, <em>Tancred Baptizing Clorinda.</em> Tancred was a fictional prince who fell in love with a pagan female warrior, Clorinda, but later mortally wounded her, and at her request baptised her just before she died.</p>

<p>Narrative painting of classical myths has many conventions that can appear confusing. This weekend I look at those associated with river gods and their associated nymphs Naiads, and tomorrow more recent relatives Ondines.</p>
<p>In Greek, and subsequently Roman, mythology, the river gods or <em>Potamoi</em> (Greek for <em>rivers)</em> are three thousand sons of Oceanus, the great river encircling the earth, and Tethys, his Titan sister and wife. A river god is both that river and a distinct deity: Achelous is the god of the River Achelous, the largest in Greece, who wrestled unsuccessfully with Hercules for the right to marry Deianira.</p>
<p>Associated with sources and bodies of fresh water are also water nymphs, Naiads or <em>Potamides,</em> often stated to be the daughters of the river gods. In ancient times, there was a weaker distinction between fresh and salt waters, so although nymphs associated with the sea are usually termed Nereids when in Mediterranean waters, or Oceanids, Naiads can also be encountered in what we would consider to be sea.</p>

<p>The great majority of paintings are made on rectangular supports, but since ancient times some artists have opted for circular or elliptical shapes instead. These are known as <em>tondo,</em> from the Italian <em>rotondo</em> meaning “round”, with the plural of <em>tondi,</em> or <em>tondos</em> if you really must.</p>

<p>This tondo of a red-figure Attic cup, now in the Louvre, is typical of classical depictions of <em>Triptolemus and Ceres,</em> and dates from 470-460 BCE. The young deity is sat in Ceres’ special winged chariot, as she provides him with seed to be distributed to the lands around the world.</p>

Painting the first month of the New Year

<p>It’s already the second day of January, the first month of 2026, the month named after Janus, the Roman god of transitions including the start of the year. Only there are several flaws in that sentence.</p>
<p>First, for the Romans and Greeks, the New Year didn’t normally occur in the middle of winter, but more commonly, at least when their calendars were in proper sync, at the start of Spring. In classical times, calendars were often chaotic: two adjacent Greek cities could be running as much as six months out of sync with one another. The Roman Empire brought a more uniform approach, but until the introduction of the Julian calendar on 1 January 45 BCE, it was usually many days or even weeks out of kilter with the seasons.</p>
<p>The Romans did name the first month of the year Ianuarius, hence the starting date of the Julian calendar. That sounds promising until you look at the origins of the name. It’s equally as likely that it was named after Juno rather than Janus, as was made plain in some ancient almanacs. But the more modern assumption that January, now a winter month, was named after Janus makes a more plausible story.</p>
<p>Janus characteristically has two faces on a single head, one looking backward to the old year, the other forward to the new: <em>Ianus Bifrons</em> in Latin.</p>

The Dutch Golden Age: Jacob van Ruisdael’s trees

<p>Of the several hundred landscape painters of the Dutch Golden Age, the best-known and most influential is Jacob van Ruisdael, whose paintings were described by Vincent van Gogh as “sublime”. Van Ruisdael was starting his career just as Nicolas Poussin was reaching his zenith in Rome, and the two were major influences on all subsequent landscape artists, particularly Thomas Gainsborough, John Constable and JMW Turner.</p>
<p>Jacob Isaackszoon van Ruisdael (1628/9-1682) was born in Haarlem into a family of painters. Presumably apprenticed within the family workshop, he was admitted to the local Guild of Saint Luke in 1648, and from the outset appears to have specialised in landscape painting.</p>

The Journey of Life 1

<p>Series paintings of times of the day and the seasons have been popular, but those trying to depict the whole of life are unusual and challenging. This weekend I look at some of the better attempts to tell the story of the journey of life. Because some of these series consist of more than five paintings, I here show selections of those longer accounts.</p>
<p>One of the earliest painted accounts of life is Nicolas Poussin’s series <em>The Seven Sacraments.</em> His first version of this was started in about 1636 as a commission for his patron and mentor Cassiano dal Pozzi, and was completed four years later.</p>

Les poussins roses ne courent pas les rues. Donc dès que Pascal-Hervé en voit un, il l'observe avec attention. Pas à pas, il s'en approche avec précaution pour ne pas l'effrayer. Puis il bondit tel un lion, l'attrape et le croque tout entier. C'est tout doux sur la langue et ça n'a pas si mauvais goût finalement.
