British Columbia Vehicle Processing Centre (BCVPC)
On a recent walk I passed the British Columbia Vehicle Processing Centre (BCVPC) and was astounded by the huge number of brand new cars parked in their seventeen-acre fenced-in lot. So, today I decided to go back and take a few photos.
As I was walking away I noticed two men with hand-held computers attending to some of the vehicles, and I stopped to ask them a few questions through the fence. They told me that the cars had come into Nanaimo a week or so ago and would be heading out again soon. Most would be leaving on ships, but a few would go overland to dealerships on Vancouver Island.
When I told them I was amazed at how many cars there were, I was told there were over a thousand right now. They also had, further away from my immediate view, a lot of trucks. I said, “Wow. That’s a lot of processing,” and the man laughed in agreement.
I have read some of the information on their website, but I’m still not clear on what exactly is involved in vehicle processing. However, I was interested to learn that: “In 2018 the site and berth went through extensive renovations, jointly funded by Western Stevedoring, Nanaimo Port Authority and Transport Canada, to facilitate its transition to the newest, state of the art vehicle processing centre in Canada.” Whatever it is they do, they do it to a lot of cars, and they do it with some taxpayer dollars.
