Black Summer and Pyrocumulonimbus clouds

Pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCb) clouds are thunderstorms that occasionally form above intense bushfire and transport smoke into the stratosphere

"PyroCb events are important sources of stratospheric aerosol. During the Australian forest fires in 2019/2020, such convective plumes transported quantities of smoke into the tropopause region comparable to those of a large volcanic eruption. In this study, we investigate the heat emission threshold at which wildfire plumes transition into pyroCbs."

NSW, Australia bushfires: This may be the first pyrocumulonimbus (Pyro CB) of the 2023/24 summer wildfire season in Australia. Remember when these fire thunderstorms were rare events? They have become more common with the #ClimateCrisis

"A fire generated thunderstorm (pyro-cumulonimbus) has formed over the Glens Creek Rd Fire, Nymboida, 30km south west of Grafton. As a result, there is a potential for escalation in fire behaviour, with erratic winds, dry lightning and significantly faster fire spread."
