We said goodbye today to Granny Weatherwax, the most fearsome and resplendent hen that ever rained terror on the earth. Most rescued commercial hens make it to three or four years old if they're lucky - Granny died at an astonishing nine years of age. It's an end of an era, she was an extraordinary force of nature, a true dragon, and we'll miss her so much. #Hens #ExBatts #RescueHens

This is Jalfrezi. I think she wants to know why I am sitting on the grass!

Thanks to the British Hen Welfare Trust we have 6 rescue hens. We went to collect them today.

They were brought up from a farm in the Scottish Borders yesterday to Inverness. They were in the back of the car for nearly 3 hours on the way home. Now they are exploring and scratching their way around the pen. We will give them a good life. This photograph was taken on their first time outside in their lives.

“It is little known that the chickens that produce the eggs that are consumed for breakfast, for baking and cooking are deemed not commercially viable at a mere 72 weeks of age. It’s around then that their egg production naturally starts to slow down and farmers look to replace them with newer, younger chickens who will keep egg production rates up. Commercial chickens are kept either in enriched cages, in barns or in free range systems. They are no longer kept in battery cages, but are still sometimes referred to as battery hens. These 72 week old chickens are sent to slaughter to be used in a range of products including human and pet foods despite a potential to live from 5-10 years, their lives are cut short. Rescue chickens find their way to smallholdings, allotments, schools, homes in towns, cities and the countryside.”

This is Binky. She’s been such a good hen at the vets recently. Got her on her second implant to keep her from laying eggs as that causes her some health issues. She had hers done the other day alongside Strawberry.

It’s not cheap, but I’m grateful to have the vet care accessible for them. Each of our hens are incredible and unique souls, as are each of the sorely missed girls that are no longer with us.

This is Babs.
She joined us a few weeks ago. She had to be rehomed from a loving family due to a change in circumstances 😔 But we’re so happy to have her in our flock.

She’s a sweet and polite girl, still finding her way with her flockmates though. Prefers to hang around on her little mezzanine level, but she’s spending a little more time on the ground with the others each passing day 🥰💚

Here is one of my #rescuehens Daisy Duke. Name started with Daisy, thought it was a hen. Turned out to be a roo. Name change! Now Duke. Sweet fella. Love #Cornishcross #Chickens #chickensofmastodon

Evening chickens! This golden girl is Willow, our eldest hen. She’s the last of the four girls we first rehomed. She’s a gentle wise soul, a loving girl that, in turn, we love so.

We’re so proud of Aila. She’s been doing so well being brave with all the others in her new flock. She even went to bed in the coop all by herself without any coaxing at all!

Strawberry still picks on her, and Binky likes to join in, so she still spends much of her time on the higher perches or the “sky bar” ontop of the coop. She is such a sweet and gentle hen 💚
