My son asked for a MP3 player... so I busted out my 20 year old Sandisk Sansa 200 and updated its firmware with #rockbox
I was surprised that not only did it still work, but that rockbox has seen continued development... it released version 4.0 on April 1 of this year.
Unfortunately, to get the #appimage to work, I had to hunt down an old version of ssl (libssl1.1), but once I installed that, the graphical utility was able to detect and update the firmware.

I seem to have missed the announcement, but #Rockbox released version 4.0 a couple of weeks ago.
All this time I'd been running development builds on my Surfans F20, but now it's finally running something tagged as stable.

Great to see the project is still alive. Digital audio players with FOSS firmware are something I can't see myself ever going without.

alright, 5th gen #ipod classic disassembled and angry bloated battery removed.
i don't really have the money right now but i hope to buy a new battery and maybe a flash module and fresh face plate for it in the future.
this was such a great #rockbox device. i still have my #sandisk #cilpzip, though. the screen is kind of bad but it still plays.
looks like the o.g. iPod that i slapped #rockbox on ages ago is starting to bulge. it's probably time to disassemble it and toss the battery into the metal can full of sand and maladjusted batteries.
i really need to figure out what to do with all these spicy pillows.
My cousin gave me her iPod in 2010 when I was in junior year of college. It had stopped working and its hard drive made spooky sounds. I bought a new drive for it, but it still wouldn’t work and a new logic board was too expensive.
15 years later, after finishing my degree and with 12 years of experience in electronics design, I took another stab. Turns out one of the series resistors on one of the USB traces was loose.
Crazy that I would never have even attempted this kind of repair in 2010 and now it felt almost too easy.
Got #RockBox installed and we’re good to go! (After I replace its totally shot battery that is)
For any folks still out there using the #Rockbox firmware, I recently discovered the Hifi Walker H2 which is both officially supported, and more importantly, still being manufactured and sold. Flashing takes a bit of patience if you're #blind, but it can be done.

Habe #Rockbox auf einem alten #iPod installiert. Einige Hürden/Learnings:
- Wird der iPod auf MacOS zurückgesetzt erhält er das Mac-Filesystem. Rockbox funktioniert aber ausschließlich mit FAT32.
- Windows formatiert größere Datenträger auch nicht mit FAT32, sondern mit ExFAT. Man braucht extra Partitions-Software, die das kann.
- Die Windows-Version von iTunes nicht via Microsoft-Store installieren, sondern eine alte Version per .exe - Die aus den Store erkennt iPods nicht (1/2)

It took so long to find the energy to figure it all out, but I finally got the iPod Classic running RockBox reliably with my flac music library. And it's using the adwaita theme to match my laptop lol. I am so happy to be able to use it for listening to my music especially since I kinda broke my HiFiWalker H2 a few months ago.

Too bad I had to bury my Sansa Clip a decade ago after it topped responding to inputs, as Rockbox still supports it.
