It's hard to believe it's virtually been a month since I last posted an update!

The underneath defector dish section had it's second coat of paint not long after my last post - getting rid of the unintentional "battle damage" look with the 2 greys. It only had 2 coats in total and it has ended up looking very good!

Dad has spent most of the month applying some aztecing decals to the model; we both agreed that this was outside my capabilities (it was borderline with Dad's)... It was frustrating and finically getting the decals on the model, but I think the end result is very visually appealing. An additional coat of white paint was also applied before the photo as the decal's shade of grey was too dark.

Most recently we've started to wire up a lighting kit designed for this specific Reliant model AMT sells. So far only the nacelles are wired up with the LEDs. First time I got to see light pass the clearcoat blue on the inner nacelle. :FishPog:

The bottom back of the model, now having the same shade of grey applied which is giving it a more pleasing result. A clearcoat blue painted piece has been glued to the centre of the bottom defector dish assembly.A look of both the top and bottom pieces of the saucer section with the aztecing applied. These were originally a very dark grey, so they've been given a thin layer of white paint to turn the shade to a lighter tone.A cross-section of one of the nacelles. This shows the 1 Blue LED strip, 1 white LED strip, a navigational direction LED (in red), and if you look closely you can see a white LED to the back of the nacelle.

As a side note I find it so fascinating seeing it "in half" and you can see how it works! One of the nacelles being tested to make sure the circuit is correct. The light is clearly passing through the clearcoat blue painted area. This was painted instead of left white because then the model would still look good even if the model isn't connected to power.

So much progress has been made since my last post:The Miranda-class has had the windows drilled, the first pass for the exposed grey bits of the back has been done on the top (as well as the grey/red band across the bridge), and the mask used so I could emulate the registration light on the real thing has come off, and works a lot better then I could've hoped.
The initial coat for the bottom grey bits have also been done; I have discovered the grey we were gonna use didn't match the grey on the top section, so that'll be fixed with subsequent layers of paint.

The inner nacelles where the warp coils are has also been painted clear-blue, as have the parts of the deflector dish that'll be lit up... But I don't have pictures of them... 😅

The next step for the top half of the saucer is to have the aztecing applied, with the bottom still needing a few more layers of grey paint to be applied before we do the same with that. :ablobcatnodfast:

A unfinished photo of the top section of a Miranda-class starship. A light underneath it shows how the windows and registration lights might look like on the finished model. The back of the bottom section of the same model. The 2 tone light/dark grey isn't intentional, and gives a "battle damaged" look which is not my intention. The idea is that this is going to be the undercoat layer, and the entire section will be painted the lighter grey with subsequent passes.

The Miranda-class is going well. The inside has been painted black to stop light leakage, certain areas has been filed to allow cabling to be run through for lighting, and the curious for the drill holes of the windows has been taped on.

Drilling the window holes is going to be a long process - so a new update want be the a while, but I’m pleased how everything is progressing! :apartyblobcat:

The saucer section of the Miranda-class model clamped together. You can see some of the window templates taped on.A closer look on the templates used for the window cutouts. The inside of the torpedo launcher assembly painted black to avoid light leaking around the surrounding area. A line has been filled on either end to allow the cables for the LED to be routed.

So update: I have been masking off the stars I want lit and going through all the pieces with a a pass of primer. The next stage is to paint the inside black to prevent light bleed… so a as good start overall! :apartyblobcat:

So I’m not big into physical modelling, but when Dad brought this to my attention I knew I had to have it! It’s gonna take some months to paint, drill, wire, and assemble this thing - but I think it’s gonna look so cool when it’s done! I love the design of the Miranda-class! :eyes:

I’m also apparently a glutton for punishment as somehow I need to fit this in with my dad on top of job searching and my existing hobbies! :neofox_laugh:
