9/3/1883 Nasce Umberto Saba

Heartplants by Gunter Hampel Quintet, released on SABA in 1965.

Inconstant Sol wrote on their blog:

In any discussion of what marks the starting point of European free jazz, this record might be high up on the list. We have posted Francois Tusques' "Free Jazz" in the past which was out in 1965 in France, certainly a turning point in the evolution of French jazz. This combo is German, however, and these are studio recordings from 1964, originally out on the Saba label..

Whether this is "free" jazz as commonly understood, is debatable imho, most of it is fairly melodic...One epithet that might fit, to the extent that these terms carry any determinate meaning, is "structural" jazz and the pieces here certainly are well organised and thought out.

I did another travel/photo blog post...

this time about a Caribbean island called Saba, which is really small and has a very unique airport. It has also been getting a lot of attention from travel writers this year.

New Call From France by The Jef Gilson Nonet feat. Jean Louis Chautemps, released in 1966 on SABA.

London Jazz Collector wrote:

Three of France’s outstanding front-line players: Jean-Louis Chautemps, Francois Janneau and Claude Lenissois – come into their own as solists in a nonet setting, an excellent showcase for their talents without an overwhelming nineteen-piece big band setting...

It covers familiar Gilson territory, large ensemble with European/ romantic melody leanings but lots of fire in the belly. One, maybe two tracks I recognised from Gilson compendium albums, merely recognition of outstanding material, and much better heard in context of the whole contemporary album rather than a sampler of “picked cherries” without context.

In an age of dialogue, why do we refuse dialogue? This is a question addressed to
all believers.

I also remember the device I saw it on back then in the Westerwald region: It was a smart white SABA, I'd guess it was the T 6716 color telecomputer, if my memory serves me correctly. My parents had a certain eye for good design.

Out Of The Background by Francy Boland, released on SABA in 1967.

Wow! We've always gone on record as liking pianist Francy Boland as part of his big band with drummer Kenny Clarke, but here on this classic Saba/MPS session, the pair wail together in a smaller quartet format – with great help from Jimmy Woode on bass, and Fats Sadi on bongos. The record is incredible, and swings with a groove that's a lot harder than you'd expect from a small group like this. Sadi is especially great, and his bongos really make the cuts wail along nicely! Most cuts are tight little groovers, with a tight modal jazzy sound – as you'd expect from MPS in the classic years. Great cuts include "Dark Eyes", "Dia-Bleu", "Wolf-Gang", and "Father Klook", but the whole album's great! - Dusty Groove

People, seriously? How can you create a web application, that asks you to input content in textboxes, where globally the left and right arrow keys will move focus to the next screen aka next text box (on top of moving the cursor within the current text box)???

Relax With My Horns by Hans Koller, released on SABA in 1966.

In the title piece close harmonies garnish a big band sound, and there is a taste of Dolphy in Koller’s alto play. The Sweetest girl I’ve Ever Known offers up a trenchant ballad with rich harmonies. Dedicated to Picasso, Music For Pablo I swings hard and up-tempo – Lüderitz’s 10 year stint in NYC stands him in good stead here. The Twister zigzags along with arresting accompaniments and musical asides. Half and Half has a big band swing sensibility and jumps into double time. Ziag Hin starts off as a march before moving into swing. Blues For Marina is a tasty piece drenched in the blues. Music For Pablo II is another piece dedicated to Picasso with a vertical cubistic feel and a powerful extended alto solo.

Sakura Sakura by Hideo Shiraki Quintet + 3 Koto Girls, released on SABA as part of their Jazz Meets the World series in 1965.

Adulated in his native Japan, drummer Hideo Shiraki led the most famous Japanese jazz group of the early 60’s. His combining jazz and traditional Japanese music brought him an invitation to the 1965 Berlin Jazz Festival and a record date. Three women playing Koto, the traditional Japanese stringed instrument, accompanied the quintet. The results: world music that works. Known in the West as ‘the Cherry Blossom Song’, the traditional Sakura Sakura finds Shiraki employing mallets, fingers, brushes, and sticks in combination with the Kyoto players as jazz and tradition blend. Yosakoi Bushi means ‘better come at night to make love’...
