Jazz Showcase by The Mastersounds released on World Pacific in 1957.

Jazz Profiles wrote on their blog:

"At World Pacific, The Mastersounds first LP – Jazz Showcase … Introducing the Mastersounds [PJM-403] incorporated many tunes and arrangements that had become staples of their repertoire during the group’s tenure at the club including a spirited [an oft-requested] version of Bud Powell’s Un Poco Loco, Wes’ Tune by Wes Montgomery, and Dexter’s Deck by tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon. This debut album also offers intriguing Buddy Montgomery arrangements on such standards as Lover, If I Should Lose You, That Old Devil Moon and Spring is Here."

Heartplants by Gunter Hampel Quintet, released on SABA in 1965.

Inconstant Sol wrote on their blog:

In any discussion of what marks the starting point of European free jazz, this record might be high up on the list. We have posted Francois Tusques' "Free Jazz" in the past which was out in 1965 in France, certainly a turning point in the evolution of French jazz. This combo is German, however, and these are studio recordings from 1964, originally out on the Saba label..

Whether this is "free" jazz as commonly understood, is debatable imho, most of it is fairly melodic...One epithet that might fit, to the extent that these terms carry any determinate meaning, is "structural" jazz and the pieces here certainly are well organised and thought out.

Jazz Concert is a 1963 live album by George Shearing and his quintet, recorded 16 February 1963 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

Scott Yanow reviewed the album for Allmusic and wrote that "The most memorable tracks include "Walkin'," "Love Walked In", and a nearly 12-minute rendition of "Love Is Just Around the Corner." Although the group always had a dominant easy-listening sound, a lot of hard-swinging often took place beneath the surface, particularly during their live sets."

Harvey Pekar of DownBeat noted, "Shearing's inventiveness, excellent sense of pace, and rhythmic suppleness place this selection in a class with his better work of 12 to 15 years ago." - Wikipedia

Ended Wednesday and welcomed Wednesday with Breeze from the East a 1964 album by vibraphonist Cal Tjader, arranged by Stan Applebaum. The album features jazzy lounge music with a quasi-Asian sound.

Stephen Cook reviewed the album for Allmusic and described the album as combining "the vibist's [Tjader's] Latin lounge style with kitschy Asian touches" describing the songs "Sake and Greens," "Cha," and "Shoji" as sounding like "'60s-era James Bond on a wild chase through the heart of Tokyo". Cook concluded by feeling that "The ultra-smooth Latin jazz sound Tjader favored has always been more infectious than demanding and Breeze from the East's commercialized mod/eastern elements only end up expanding the pop exotica mix". - Wikipedia

Several Shades of Jade is a 1963 album by Cal Tjader arranged by Lalo Schifrin.

Stewart Mason reviewed the album for Allmusic and wrote that of Tjader and Schifrin's collaboration that it was "...no more traditional Asian music than Tjader's similar albums from this period are traditional Latin American music, but the pair wisely avoids the standard clichés of Asian music (no smashing gongs after every musical phrase or melodies that sound like rejects from The Mikado). Instead, Schifrin frames Tjader's meditative vibraphone solos in arrangements that strike a cool balance between western kitsch and eastern exotica, never tipping too far in either direction. ...Several Shades of Jade is actually an interesting experiment that succeeds more often than it fails." - Wikipedia

European Jazz Sounds by Michael Naura Quintet, released on Brunswick in 1963.

One of the greatest albums of European jazz from the early 60s -- a tremendous effort from pianist Michael Naura, working here with lots of vibes and a fair bit of grooves -- in a style that sounds a lot like some of the best early recordings made by the team of Roy Ayers and Jack Wilson! The groove here is definitely modern, but also plenty darn soulful too -- and thanks to some alto sax in the mix, the tracks have a cutting quality that really gives them an edge -- a kind of rasp that predates some of the late 60s soulfulness of the Saba/MPS scene, of which this album is a definite precursor! Alongside Naura's piano, the group also features vibes by Wolfgang Schluter, alto sax by Peter Reinke, bass by Wolfgang Luschert, and drums by the great Joe Nay - Dusty Groove
