Our highlights tour of Punta Arenas, Chile, included a visit to the cemetery, rated as one of the ten most beautiful in the world by CNN only a few years before our visit in 2016. The area of land was donated by Sara Braun, a leading businesswoman in the region in the late 19th and early 20th century, and her body along with those of many rich families are located in the cemetery.

It's a sunny day with patchy, thin sheets of cloud in the sky. We're in a grand public cemetery comprising avenues of gravel between beautiful mausoleums of stone and marble. Directly in front of us there is one in black stone blocks, reminiscent of ancient Greek or Roman buildings, with a shallow, sloped roof and a portico with four fluted columns in front of the door. Nearer to us on the right there is one in white blocks with a round window set high up and a small railed-off forecourt around it with a few pretty bushes. More mausoleums of varying designs are to the left across a small section of lawn and topiary, each one no more than a few metres tall.
