For edition humboldt digital (ehd, edition-humboldt.de), I've today at #DayOfDH2024 finished the “Nearby places” function for the index of places.

What does the function do? For a place in the index, not only the place itself is marked in a map, but also all other places from the index within a radius of 30 km.

It will be uploaded to the project's internal website tomorrow - the public will be able to use it with the new version of ehd next summer.

The graphic is composed of a pale red circle in the center, at the edges of which the various text and information types (letters, diaries, registers, chronology, etc.) of edition humboldt digital are placed as icons. Many of them are connected to each other by red lines. Grouped around this circle are other external information resources that edition humboldt digital links, integrates, or uses to enrich its own data. These include, for example, the German Text Archive, web services on taxonomies of plants, correspSearch, Wikipedia and other digital editions. In addition, the graphic shows two arrows leading out of the inner circle. They symbolize the printed publications as well as the data pulikation created from the TEI XML data.
