Some thoughts about school avoidance and neurodiversity that @hattdesigns and I have written. #attendance #neurodiversity #schoolrefusal #education

If this many kids adamantly resist going to school, what's going on at #school? Shit like this is not the kids'problem. It's the #educationsystem's problem.
And I'm wondering how many #queer :newpride: :anqueer_flag: kids resist going to school
Lately, I have felt strongly that the most important thing is life.
I used to think of it as ``just fine-sounding talk,'' but as I experience my son's illness, coronavirus, and conflict up close, I realize that there is nothing more important than life.
It doesn't really matter whether children go to school or not.
Tonight on ABC there’s a doco about ‘School Can’t’ I’m not sure if I’ll watch it as my kids are firmly in the 38% of so-called chronically absent kids. We are extremely lucky to attend a supportive school (that we drive 15km each way to attend 🤦♀️). The accompanying article is good though #SchoolRefusal #neurodiversity #autism #Australia
Even the simple term "#schoolRefusal" comes from a variety of backgrounds and situations.
Even my eldest son and second son were quite different.
However, there are many people in the education world who simply think of all issues in one place, such as, ``How to deal with truancy...''
The number of children not attending school will continue to increase for some time yet...

It is important for children to do a variety of things that they like and find what suits them.
My son is #schoolRefusal, but I feel positive, saying, “He is now able to secure important time by not going to school.''
I don't think he'll be able to find it anytime soon, but I'm rooting for my son who is on a journey to find himself in a small house.

The hardest time for me after my son became a #schoolrefuser was "when he first stopped going to school."
I was very afraid of deviating from the route because I had a stereotypical idea of education.
If there is a system that can support parents during this period, I think that unnecessary pressure will be reduced and children will be able to spend their time at home with more peace of mind.

When my sons became #schoolrefusers, some parents told me to go to free school.
But, my sons rejected even free schools.
All school refusers are completely different!
“The findings of this study suggest that youth suicides are closely tied with in-person school attendance.”

This aligns with experiences in our communities of neurodivergent and disabled people, where we reframe “school refusal” as “school-induced anxiety”. Bullying is only a part of the problem.

This is a really positive story, aimed at dealing with young people's #anxiety around returning to #school post-pandemic. I shall be interested to see what the results are, and I suspect they will be better than punitive approaches that punish parents for children's difficulties.
#SchoolRefusal Too often it's assumed that kids miss school because of poor parenting, which both stigmatises families and excuses the lack of support for genuinely struggling young people.
