"After submitting drawings, plans, and digital renderings, Rowan Berry (b. 1996) was honored as the 2017 Incorporation of Goldsmiths Outstanding Scottish Student while attending the Glasgow School of Art. The award allowed Berry to create a silver goblet (5) under the tutelage of silversmith and master chaser Michael Lloyd at his workshop in Dumfries and Galloway. Of Berry’s inspiration for the goblet, the artist states she is “inspired by religious, spiritual and personal objects, and the connotations of the simple symbols of the circle and cross. I understand the symbols of the circle and cross to mean many different things in connection to love, religion, luck and faith. Another thing I accomplished yesterday was buying the oxygen tank I need for my new Smith Little Torch propane/oxygen system. Damn tank cost $270+, but it'll only cost about $25 to refill. I have no idea how long it will last. I'm hoping to set it up much later today, after I finish the pendants I've been working on and do all that yard work. #silversmithing

The benefit of this setup: I'll have better control over my torch for soldering and I can legitimately teach students how to solder.

Determined to get an early start today. I want to finish up the third pendant I started yesterday and start three more. I need inventory to take to a museum shop tomorrow and am hoping to have enough to present at a Seattle gallery before month-end. And then there are the eight art shows I have scheduled this summer... #silversmithing… (1/3)

Here's the bumblebee jasper piece, mostly finished. I need to polish it (again) and then make and attach the custom bumblebee jasper and sterling silver chain that will be part of it. I'll probably make the beaded chain while I'm watching TV later this week. #silversmithing

The malachite piece still needs a bail and I'm just too pooped to make it today. It'll be the first thing I do in the morning.

Still working on the other two I started; I'll do the purple one as part of another batch tomorrow.

Two pendant sketches with stones in place. Left has two small Kingman turquoise cabochons, right has one large bumblebee jasper cabochon. I'm thinking the one on the right needs a larger backplate. It'll also have a custom silver and bumblebee jasper necklace. Both will be mounted on sterling silver. #silversmithing

Ok, I'm all caught up on journaling, had my breakfast and coffee, and am finally ready to get to work. I'm heading down to my studio with the lofty goal of making three new pendants today. If I'm feeling ambitious, I'll start a thread for each project and post photos as I work. #silversmithing

I try not to enter hardware stores because I see too many things that would be handy to have but I needed another MAP gas canister. I saw this convenient stand and nozzle set up that will make my silver smithing, stained glass making and glass shaping much easier.

A propane/MAP gas canister stand with 41 inch hose and trigger for brazing metal. The hose connects directly to the gas canister and the trigger lights the gas, has an adjustment for flow and makes it easier to aim the flame at the object one is trying to heat. The trigger has an approximately 4 inch steel nozzle to aim the flame.

I've decided to up my #silversmithing game with a propane (or acetylene) + oxygen Smith Little Torch. I think it will give me a lot more control over the flame I use for soldering, etc.

Now I just have to figure out where I can buy tanks of oxygen. Medical supply, probably.🤔

En liten planka i silver. Säkert inspirerad av mitt träslöjdslärarjobb. Med det sagt känner jag ett motstånd till att identifiera mig med mitt jobb. Jag tycker att det är nog att det upptar nästan all min vakna tid (Jag hatar måndagar 🐱 o.s.v.). Med det sagt tycker jag att alla ska ha möjlighet att skapa och att skapande blir mer intressant om det praktiseras av fler. Därav känner jag inte heller ett motstånd mot ordet "pyssel". The net effect of all this is that I spend a lot of time, effort, and money on creatively exploring new materials and techniques and get stuck with jewelry items my clientele doesn't understand or want to pay for. It's heartbreaking.

It also turns my #silversmithing efforts into a repetitive exercise making the same old things that I know will sell. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'll spend the day in my studio today. (It's finally warm enough that I only need one space heater in there.) I'm experimenting with a new (to me) metal, Shibuichi. It's a blend of 15% silver and 85% copper that supposedly makes interesting patterns with certain patinas applied. I've got an idea for earrings and want to experiment with the patinas. I'm going to do a little more homework before I head down and get to work. A 3x6" sheet cost me $68 so I don't want to screw it up. 😬 #silversmithing
