Personally I would find it odd wearing a jersey from an event I didn't take part in. Probably because I would see it as a memento of the event. However, I would prefer a jersey being worn or being donated to be worn by others rather than going to waste.
I wouldn't wear a jersey if its purpose is to identify a winner, such as a Tour de France yellow jersey or World Champion's rainbow jersey. I will never experience such competitive highs on a bike to wear a winner's jersey. That's what makes them very special and, to my mind, reserved for a small handful of wearers.
Other items are fair game... I love my rainbow jersey inspired socks 🙂
