And @malvikasharan 's last lesson:
- connection inspires change
- example of EchoEight workshop - arts for social science where people dance first alone, then I'm small groups then all together and reflect.
#stepup2025

2025-07-07

Continuing with @malvikasharan 's lessons
- clarity is kindness
- #FoMo is not a strategy, you need to ask questions
- setting clear roles
- recognising all contributors (e.g., all contributors tool)
- Open leadership & collaboration
- many ways of taking on roles with leadership
- Matrix of engagement
- let's then come back
- pursue growth & honor your needs
- small is good, small is all
- invite people to work with you
#stepup2025

Slide from Malvika's talk with the following text
FOMO is not a strategy!

What is the shared goal, purpose and value?

Who makes decisions?

Who gets to participate in knowledge/tech production?

Who controls and protects this system?

Who enjoys and benefits from the outcome?

Who is responsible for addressing challenges and harm?

How can open source/science further knowledge equity?

How can you/l build agency and take leadership roles?

The final #stepup2025 keynote is by @malvikasharan on shaping research (culture) through communities - lessons from #OpenScience
Communities should center human perspectives.
Few lessons:
- mentorship and intentional inclusion
- open science for equity
- but open science is not open by default
- #OLS is dedicated to capacity building and diversifying leadership
- volunteering & importance of showing up
- as Comm mng: we need to respect their paths and provide paths for them

Last talk of #stepup2025 parallel session is by our Krishna on Towards a declarative, reproducible, homogeneous, cross-platform command-line
environment across remote HPC machines.
He's a terminal enthusiast and he's telling us how that's the best way towards reproducibility.
Get your dot files (like GNU stew), manage the system (like ansible), plus installers. His solution his own tool plus Pico, mise and topgrade.
Very cool live demo and text based slides!!

The #RSE group at #imperial have been offering a free service to try to reproduce your #ResearchSoftware... but nobody has attended any of their weekly sessions (why?? are they scared? Are they perfect?)

Diego (#Imperial) shows a python guide for reproducibility.
It's the researchers' responsibility to ensure reproducibility. (Not optional)
But there's a lot of terminology and tools to learn and #dRTPs are here to help!!
Researchers need a practical and simple guide to follow.
Here are the steps:
1. Indicate the dependencies
2. Say where you are running the tool
3. Explain how to install it
4. Upload the tool to #zenodo
5. Ask a friend to try reproduce it (unsupervised)
6. Iterate

Last session of the #stepup2025, now I've jumped to the #software track.
Starting with Two more tiny Python packages for scientific computing: mpi-pytest and petsctools by Connor Ward
Both of these tools have been created within #firedrake
mpi-pytest looks cool

We are now with: No Secrets, Just Trust: Securely Deploying Infrastructure Without Persistent Credentials by
Brian Maher (#UCL #ARC)
Secrets are evil!! It's difficult to manage them, update, audit its use...
What if we use trust anchors?
We can use ssh certificates that are automatically generated by our vault.

A colder talk now at #stepup2025? ❄️ FRIDGE - Harnessing the power of AIRR supercomputers for trusted research by @JimMadge

#TRE are environments that allow working with sensitive data, but some of that research needs HPC, but #TRE are not HPCs, they are normally on-premise and scaling could be very expensive. And similarly the opposite is true.

#FRIDGE helps to sort out this problem. Provides a platform to manage users as well as manage the tenancy. They don't know how manage job submissions.

First afternoon #stepup2025 talk is about Building a Production-Ready Barts Health Secure Data Environment: Tooling, Access Control, and Cost Governance by Idowu Samuel Bioku
They've managed so far to get custom Cams tailored for different needs, secure data connection to research workspaces, cost management tooling to help manage research budgets, RBAC integration, and more being produced.

2025-07-07

After a nice standing lunch and meeting new people we start with the afternoon session of #stepup2025 when you need to clone yourself to not suffer from #FoMo. unfortunately, I didn't have much time after lunch to go through the cloning phase, so I've had taken a decision, I'm joining the #infrastructure track.

2025-07-07

And now, just before #stepup2025 lunch a quick review of the posters
- Designing support strategies for enabling cultural change in data practices for the physical sciences
- Research Data Stewardship at #UCL
- Building a Scalable, Open Research Data Repository with Ceph and Customised InvenioRDM

Comment from the audience at the end of Aman Goel’s talk about diversity and inclusion in practice: “We have to stand up to the racists and the fascists.”

2025-07-07

Diversity and Inclusion in Practice by Aman Goel, starting with a disclaimer and asking about our job situation in the UK from a immigration perspective)
Are the hiring managers supported by the institutions? Have the institutions an international hiring policy?
Immigration rules have been tightened recently, and the texts are very full of legal jargon that needs help from the institutions to suggest and explain.

They are building a @thecarpentries incubator lesson! 🤩🤩🤩

Eamon Bell is trying to solve the problem of Arts, Humanities and culture (AHC) researchers have a small engagement to computing
Their solution is
ccpahc.ac.uk
They are looking for any dRTPs to engage (mailing list, circulate "call for codes" EoI, ...)

Next is another from #UCL #ARC, Jonathan is talking about DisCouRSE and how to create a community of leaders through cohorts to have an amplifying effect.

They've got some funding coming soon!!

Next is me! I'll be quickly talking about why and how we are creating an #OSPO at #UCL.
Short answer: because it's fun and #OpenSource needs all the support it can take.

Research needs to be reproducible, sustainable, interdisciplinary and with a great commitment to #EDIA. All that requieres specific skills.

@ekaroune @turingway have done a case study at the #ATI creating the personas for a variety of roles.

Another one they did is the professionalisation of research community managers.

Both of these case studies have published papers.
Another one is about the current landscape, which is still on the oven.

#stepup2025

A cartoon with all the different roles that contributes as data science
The cartoon shows all the way from general public, trainers and many TRPs
2025-07-07

The Alliance for data science professionals have published a standard
afdsp.co.uk/standards

@ekaroune @turingway have used that as a starting point to see how it can be expanded to all the other domains and skills.

#stepup2025

2025-07-07

Next is @ekaroune about professionalising diverse data science roles through #ATI and the @turingway
The data science gap has been a problem being highlighted in different areas and government acts.

What's the 🦄 data scientist? Is it a myth or a reality?
The skills as a single role where a person has all the skills is a myth. There are different tasks and it's multidisciplinary.
