#syslog_ng

Reading files and #monitoring directories became a lot more efficient in recent #syslog_ng releases. However, it is also needed manual configuration. Version 4.11 of syslog-ng can automatically configure the optimal setting for both.

Version 4.10 of #syslog_ng introduced file size-based log rotation. Thanks to this, storage space is no longer filled with logs with the risk that you might not see older logs if the message rate is higher than expected.

The #syslog_ng 4.11 release is coming soon. Thousands of automatic tests run before each source code commit, but nothing can replace real-world hands-on tests.

Help us testing #elasticsearch & #OpenSearch data-streams, #Kafka source, #cmake fixes & much more!

If you want to test the new #Kafka source from the upcoming #syslog_ng release, there is now an easy way if you are on @opensuse / #SLES or @fedora / #RHEL (and compatibles). Just use my syslog-ng git snapshot repo:

The syslog-ng stats-exporter() allows you to collect #syslog_ng statistics using #Prometheus. Version 4.10 of syslog-ng added options to ensure that all related options of syslog-ng-ctl are now available in stats-exporter() too.

The upcoming #syslog_ng release will come with a brand new #Kafka source.

Help us to make sure that syslog-ng is tested with a wide variety of Kafka versions and settings. Luckily, compiling syslog-ng with the Kafka source is easy:

Is there anyone still using #HDFS? Not just with #syslog_ng, but at all. I'm curious, as the HDFS destination is the last #Java-based driver in syslog-ng.

Nobody responded to my related posts for years, so 4.11 will be the last release to have it.

Terrace party anyone? 😉 First day in the office this year, and I got this wonderful view when arrived. We did not have this much #snow in 15 years here in #Budapest.

I am back after a long #vacation. If you need an urgent response from me about #syslog_ng or anything, send it now (again). Or we can discuss it #IRL on our terrace 🥶

My last working day this year. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy new year using my all time favorite greeting card :-)
I'll be back with #syslog_ng news and blogs next year.

Recently, one of our power users contributed #OpenSearch data streams support to #syslog_ng, which reminded me to also do some minimal testing on the latest @OpenSearchProject release with syslog-ng. TL;DR: both worked just fine.

One of the most requested syslog-ng feature was file size based log rotation. It is now available as part of the #syslog_ng 4.10 release:

#Kafka source is coming to #syslog_ng! It is still under development, but you can already easily #test it by using syslog-ng's package build system. You can have it up and running in less than half an hour. It is stable and fast!

The next #syslog_ng release will feature a brand new @ApacheKafka source. You can already test this if you do not mind building the syslog-ng package yourself. Luckily it's easy and does not require developer knowledge:

Version 15.0 of #FreeBSD was released yesterday. As usual, I installed it next day and started #syslog_ng on it:

Dec 3 14:37:08 fb15 syslog-ng[3358]: syslog-ng starting up; version='4.10.1'

It's time to migrate my syslog-ng test environment to this FreeBSD release 😉

My @turris Omnia #Linux #router is 9 years old, but still receiving updates regularly. My favorite detail from the last update e-mail:

• Updated package syslog-ng from version 4.7.1-1 to version 4.10.2-r1

A long-waited feature for #syslog_ng, the #Kafka source, is getting ready soon. The development is still in progress, but you can already try it, and it is worth the effort. How? Using the very same tool the syslog-ng #testing and release process relies on.

The blank() filter of #syslog_ng is a filter function with a descriptive name: it selects empty or undefined name-value pairs. While most of the functionalities that blank filter provides are available long time ago, using this new filter makes configurations easier to understand.

What are your options, if you want to have #syslog_ng up and running on #AIX?

- AIX #ToolBox by #IBM now includes syslog-ng #OpenSource
- compile the latest code from source
- syslog-ng PE by OneIdentity if you need commercial support
