Ok, this is probably a question I could answer if I wade through all of the bullshit that passes as search engines and tech sites these days, but I thought I'd try a shortcut first, and Ask Mastodon.
If I have a windows 10 box, what is the best way to install win98 software that might want it's own drivers and versions of underlying core OS bits?
It's proprietary code, the creator has passed away, it was hand rolled for me, and I have about 20 years worth of formulations and product history using it. I have all the licensing, I've just lost the machine upon which it has been running since it was compiled.

@hisold My bank stopped issuing #girocard cards with #magstrip 10+ years ago as magstrip was phased out and #NFC was phased in as well as #PSD1 being introduced.
That's the main push factor: Alongside lower processing fees and faster processing, the Chip+PIN & #NFC systems actually request a blockage of the amount and will automatically decline without incuring fees if the balance / limit is below that amount - sometimes even before the PIN has been entered (it'll just not show it until the PIN is entered so fraudsters can't just abuse this as a means to check balance.
It's also insightful because #fraud would be way more rampant if the card issuer, payment processor and card system operator [i.e. AMEX, VISA, MasterCard] didn't all run their own AFE [Anti-Fraud Engine] each automatically assessing risks within less than a second for every transaction.
But that's just some cold OSINT based off #TechSupport and peeking behind the curtains professionally...
Rest assured if you have a CC you can be as certain that someone tried to abuse it as I'm certain my bank blocked fraudulent money orders against my account because of AFEs working - it's just > 99% of all fraud attempts get blocked instantly and merchants rate-limited or kicked off the system when they do something suspicious.
So yeah, that "#magstrip" may be just lacquer but unless it's specifically advertised otherwise only holds the CC & CVV as well as service codes [i.e. chip+pin only] to tell the terminal "Don't accept magstrip, mandate Chip+PIN"]...
Only underdeveloped countries like the #US still use #Magstrips and #credit and not Chip+PIN & #debit!

How do I stop my partner from taking over every Bluetooth connection?
Potentially silly #Mastodon question -- why do links to my website no longer show as link cards/previews?
For example, today's newsletter...
After Firefox update on android phone, I can no longer connect to duckduckgo.com
This morning I did a tech support phone call with an existing client. Based on her area code, I think sheâs in California, but I donât actually know that for sure. Itâs kind of humorous! With credit card billing, I have to enter the billing zip code, but I donât bother looking them up. The location just doesnât really matter.
Anyway, back to the call. She visited a website for an animal rescue organization. Seems safe enough, right? She ended up with an uncontrollable, noisy pop-up that said her computer was infected. âDonât turn your computer off!â it said, and it wouldnât stop beeping.
She did the right thing. She turned her computer off! Iâm so proud of her.
At some point, she turned her computer back on, and everything seemed normal. She called me to see if there was anything else to do. An extremely computer literate person in her life had recommended that she do a factory reset on her computer, but she was hoping she wouldnât have to do that much work.
This is where risk assessment comes in.
I told my client that her advisor was not wrong at all. That was absolutely the safest and best advice.
But, usually those pop-ups are the baited hook, and not the malware. If my client had clicked on a link, or called the âsupportâ phone number in the pop-up, the risk level goes up immediately. Instead, she did the one thing the cybercriminal told her not to do, because it defeats the infection attempt: she turned the computer off.
I offered to reset the browser, but warned her that doing so might delete some saved security settings, and sheâd probably have to re-enter passwords on some of the sites she visits. I also told her that she could keep using the computer for a few days without any changes, and if the problem doesnât reoccur, everything is probably fine.
Remember, the pop-up is the baited hook, not the malware.
For now, she chose to take no action. The call was ten minutes long. She offered to pay. I told her no, letâs call this one customer care. I told her that if she had agreed to have me to reset the browser or run a virus scan, and things like that, I wouldâve charged her, but not for answering a few questions.
THE LESSON
The client is the person with the power. Explain options and risks. Let the client make the decision. Itâs their equipment. Itâs their life. Itâs their money.
I couldâve taken advantage of the situation and said, âOh, yes, your advisor is right! We must factory reset your computer! Iâll help you do that right now!â Thatâs how I wouldâve made the most money today. Instead, I chose to keep a client for life. The money will come.
Apple hates me, needed to reset my password to get my developer account set up. They won't text me from the laptop I'm on, I have to use someone else's Apple device. So get the other Apple device, do reset password all over again enter the same exact details (email & phone), and then they text me to verify me đ€Š why couldn't we do that from the PC?
