I don't think the creator is under the impression that this will be as useful as Spanish on your holiday to Benidorm. But there are other uses. Lots of people believe they're bad at languages, mostly due to the inept, half-hearted way they're taught in schools. However learning an easy language like this could give people the confidence to attempt a "proper" language.
Also by having to come up with your own definitions for everything and still be understood, it sounds like a fantastic tool for boosting your mental agility as well as being fun.

Very interesting! The hardest thing about having a conversation in another language is realising that you don't know the word for a specific thing and then having to come up with another way of expressing yourself without missing a beat. It's like playing Articulate.
We were moving house and I remember wanting to say "that pile of CDs" in Spanish, but not knowing the word for pile. I substituted "mountain" which is clearly wrong but is still perfectly understandable. This language seems tailor-made for people who are good at doing that sort of thing.

Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants Screening & Panel
In 2018 we are pleased to launch “Standing on the shoulders of Giants” our new “Science” documentary category which will accept films for 2019.
This prelaunch event will host a prestigious panel, of eminent scientists and film makers to discuss the importance of science on the big screen.
As part of the event we will be screening Before the Big Bang 5 featuring the late Stephen Hawking and his collaborators James Hartle and Thomas Hertzog, this documentary explores their ‘No Boundary Proposal’ of the origins of the universe.
Our esteemed panel will feature:
Hannah Joshua, New Scientist Subeditor
After completing a masters’ degree in theoretical physics at Imperial College London, Hannah branched out into science journalism, joining the team at New Scientist as a subeditor.
In her time working for the magazine, she has appeared in Facebook live streams as Seven of Nine from Star Trek and learned a constructed language called Toki Pona for a feature on apps that can help us become bilingual.
When not busy editing the latest science and technology news, she can be found writing about her wacky inventions like teabag-dunking robots, pairs of shoes that summon taxis and phone chargers powered by applause. She also makes bite-size videos to showcase her creations and the deceptively simple circuits they contain.

Toki Pona is excellent for proverbs and sayings.
mani li ala pona anu ike.
"Knowing that you don’t know something is different than knowing what the something is that you don’t know. It might be bullshit, but it’s still there; it doesn’t have to be true to have mass and take up space. “Eskimos have fifty words for snow” is one of those things that people say, a phrase that will go on living in your brain, unused but not thrown away, buried at the bottom of the drawer like a power adaptor to a console you no longer have but will never quite rid yourself of. And when we hit something like this—when we run aground on this point at which all we know is what we don’t—we discover something interesting: just as knowledge has substance, shape, and structure, so does ignorance."
