Ralph Wardlaw, Congregationalist, reflects on Ecclesiastes 5:8-20; James 2:5; and Psalm 72:4. He urges against oppression because Jesus, King of Zion, has largely chosen the poor as his subjects.

When you hear of the poor, do you think of “God’s people”, or do you protect your wallet? Which way are your faith leaders driving you?

How can you avoid oppression on one hand, and favoritism on the other?

RALPH WARDLAW (1779-1853) Lectures on the book of Ecclesiastes "The Lord Jesus, the King of Zion, has 'chosen the poor of this world, rich in faith, and heirs of his kingdom! They constitute a large proportion of his subjects. 'He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor."
