#tunicate

Our team at #OIST published the first complete #mitochondrial #genome for an #appendicularian #tunicate, #Oikopleura dioica. Its non-coding region is unusually large and repetitive. We plan to sequence more genomes from related species to reveal patterns of evolutionary conservation that will help elucidating function of the unannotated regions. doi.org/10.1093/gbe/evae182

The papillae of Ciona, a marine, non-vertebrate #tunicate, have many functions crucial for their biphasic lifestyle. This #PLOSBiology study describes different papillae cell types and how they contribute to #development of the larvae.

“If a body plan was already established [at 500 million years ago], and the tunicates are actually the sister group of , then vertebrates may be older as well”

Bizarre ancient #sea creature brings evolution mystery to the surface
A new #tunicate #fossil, a close relative of vertebrates, is half a billion years old. There is now strong evidence that #tunicates are the closest relatives to #vertebrates, but a mystery still surrounds them. How did they evolve, and what did they evolve from? A 500 million-year-old fossil is now telling us more about the #evolution of these peculiar life forms. arstechnica.com/science/2023/0

Three years ago, if you’d asked me to name some animals found in rockpools, I sure as heck wouldn’t have mentioned sea squirts. Now, they’re one of my favourite animals and at West Runton, there’s at least 10 different species! This one is Sidnyum turbinatum.

Underwater - bunches of small, vase-shaped sea squirts with lacy openings at the top. Peach in colour.

Oh the colours in this photo! Another favourite from my dock fouling experience in Plymouth. I found this colonial sea squirt Botrylloides violaceus in several different colours at this location.

I adore this image so much. I think it looks like a painting! Sea squirts from a marina in Suffolk. 2022 was the year I first went dock fouling. 😍

Sea squirt on sea squirt! I think what we’re seeing here is the colonial sea squirt Diplosoma listerianum covering a solitary sea squirt Ciona intestinalis. From a marina in Plymouth.

In the centre on the picture is a sea squirt, erect and with 2 siphons. The edge of the siphons is wavy with yellow dots. The main body of the sea squirt is covered in a colony of little sea squirts that give it a bumpy texture. Surrounding the squirts are red and green seaweeds

I can’t wait to go dock fouling again. This colonial sea squirt Botrylloides diegensis was pretty special.
