"In 1993, a Dutch couple commissioned a home that could structure different aspects of family life, such as sleeping, working, playing and dining, around their daily routines. In response, the Möbius House was designed with an intertwining trajectory that aligns the working spaces and bedrooms, with collective areas positioned at the intersections..."

UNStudio designs "urban speaker" as HQ of K-pop music agency

Amsterdam-based UNStudio has used sweeping geometric lines and metal surfaces to bring a sense of performance to the Seoul headquarters of South Korean music agency YG Entertainment.

Abutting an existing office building used by the agency, the seven-storey headquarters designed by UNStudio contains offices, meeting rooms and recording studios.

YG HQ is a headquarters for YG Entertainment that was designed by UNStudio

Designed to resemble a speaker, the building contrasts the exposed concrete of the neighbouring building with a central glazed section flanked by "shell-like" metal panel cladding.

To the northeast, the building's "quiet side" is more enclosed, while to the southwest it opens up with glazing and balconies overlooking an adjacent park.

The building has a sculptural form that was designed to look like a speaker

"It is designed to be more reminiscent of a product than a building; one in which every design feature has a performative function," said the studio.

"The new YG HQ aligns in height, floors and functionality with its older brother, while creating a new impulse for this location and an organisation that is enabled by its unique positioning between city and park."

The building features office space, recording studios and meeting rooms

The offices are organised around a four-storey skylit atrium that provides a meeting point for all of its users that pulls light deeper into the building's plan.

A series of projecting "pods" with large windows overlook this atrium, providing spaces for either working or resting.

"This area acts as a central stage for the lower level offices and the recording studios, as well as for the users, staff and visitors," said the studio.

All of the office spaces have been organised on the park side of the building to ensure daylight across the floors.

Way-finding is incorporated into the interior design through colour-coding and sweeping lines that mirror the geometry of the building.

Curving lines were incorporated throughout the design of the interior

Lighting is integrated throughout, in strips that follow the lines of the interiors and in panels underneath the staircases, intended to turn the office into a glowing beacon at night.

"In the evenings the illumination concept of the various interior zones employs the facade lines to reveal a glimpse of various layers within the building, accentuating the quality of performance inherent to the entertainment and music industry," said the studio.

The interior has a layered and futuristic look

In the nearby city of Seongnam, Korean architect Moon Moon also designed a building for a K-pop agency, the K-Pop Curve, which features a curved concrete frontage.

Elsewhere, architect Glenn Sestig created a monolithic recording studio for electronic music duo Soulwax that nods to 1960s Italian architecture.

UNStudio and Nihon Sekkei unveil Shanghai Jiuguang Center

Dezeen promotion: UNStudio and Nihon Sekkei have created a semi-enclosed commercial complex in Shanghai, which comprises stacked blocks of different shapes and materials arranged around a courtyard.

Located within the inner ring of north Shanghai, adjacent to Daning Park, the newly opened Shanghai Jiuguang Center includes a shopping mall, a department store and twin office blocks of 350,000 square metres, making it the largest shopping centre complex in north Shanghai.

Shanghai Jiuguang Center is a new retail complex in Shanghai

The project is described by UNStudio and Nihon Sekkei as a "people-centred urban flagship complex".

Unlike the closed-box designs typical of shopping malls, it features a large central courtyard, around which various stacked volumes of different shapes and sizes are arranged.

Parts of Shanghai Jiuguang Center's facade is designed to resemble origami

Each of these volumes features a different geometric facade.

Bright white volumes, which were designed to resemble origami and are clad with ceramic elements rotated at different angles, face a major elevated road on the south and east side of the complex.

Below the white ceramic surface of these volumes, a glass curtain wall reveals the retailers and an entrance on the ground floor.

Shanghai Jiuguang Center's west side is clad with golden triangular blocks

The west side of the building features a volume clad with golden triangular blocks, which are intended to reference a precisely-cut diamond in order to highlight the luxury position of the shopping mall.

Black blocks that house the upper floors of the complex are clad in layers of aluminium alloy plates embedded with metal louvres.

In contrast to the hard, metallic textures of the exterior of the building, the interior of the courtyard features curved lines to soften the space.

The facade around the atrium is clad in light champagne-coloured aluminium alloy strips, which form soft flowing curves together with pearlescent ceramic tiles.

The inner courtyard of the complex is partially clad with pearlescent tiles

"From the outset, the courtyard facade was conceived as a pearl set within its shell, creating a fluid experience and a mother-of-pearl effect in the centre of the building," UNStudio said.

The designers intended to create a space that encourages social interactions and experience.

Shanghai Jiuguang Center includes a department store, shopping mall and twin offices

"An integral element of the central courtyard is the sunken area with integrated seating," said UNStudio. "Planting and lighting is designed to be used for events."

Looking up from the courtyard, a flowing skirt-like form defines the commercial spaces with interconnected curving surfaces.

The building has a number of balconies that open onto the courtyard

Various balconies open onto the courtyard space to blur the relationship between interior and exterior.

"The surrounding facade expresses the interior design and identity and, like the inner lining of a dress, the balcony details feature colour that is matched with the colours predominantly used to accentuate the interior spaces," said UNStudio.

The complex aims to encourage social interactions and experience, according to the architects

Semi-enclosed walkways wind around the walls of the atrium space, connecting different areas of the building and guiding visitors to the upper floors, where a rooftop garden is located.

UNStudio to revamp conference centre for Brainport technology region

Dutch architecture office UNStudio is renovating and expanding the Elysion Congress Centre in Eindhoven by adding a cantilevered auditorium and vertical gardens.

Along with expanding the original floorplan, the practice will add a wood-and-steel auditorium with a capacity of 1,500 as well as a foyer and catering spaces to the congress centre in Eindhoven's technology region, Brainport.

The auditorium will cantilever over the existing buildings, so the original hotel and conference facilities can remain in operation.

UNStudio will add a cantilevering auditorium

UNStudio said the foyer would feature a wooden staircase and "vertical green gardens". The practice plans to integrate technological innovations into the project to improve the centre's sustainability.

"The facade of the congress centre is principally made from wood and glass," explained UNStudio.

"The ambition is to couple this with nitrogen-dioxide absorbing surfaces – an innovative new nano-technology that can capture pollutants from its surroundings."

The studio is working on a research project into applying nanotechnologies to construction materials such as concrete and paint.

Nitrogen dioxide is released by cars and the burning of fossil fuels, and can be harmful to human health.

In addition, UNStudio will look at greener transport options as part of the Elysion Congress Centre expansion, adding more electric car charging ports along with bicycle parking space.

The new auditorium will be made from wood and steel

UNStudio will also build a tower with hotel and leisure facilities to host international guests.

The practice won a competition to redesign the conference centre as part of a project to increase the Brainport region's international appeal.

"Brainport Eindhoven is currently one of the leading innovative technology regions in Europe," said UNStudio.

"To enhance its international positioning as an inspiring region of technology, design and knowledge, the Dutch city of Eindhoven has the ambition to realise a clearly identifiable, new, state of the art congress and conference centre."

The project, which is expected to complete in 2025, is part of a €7 million programme to invest in Brainport.

Dutch multinational company Philips was founded in Eindhoven, and the city's Brainport region attracts technology companies and startups such as Lightyear, which makes road-legal solar-powered cars, and chip developers EFFECT Photonics.

UNStudio is already involved in developing the Brainport Smart District in Helmond, a city in the same region that is 10 minutes from Eindhoven by train.

In a lecture screened exclusively for Dezeen's VDF x reSITE collaboration, UNStudio associate director Marianthi Tatari said the development would "become the smartest neighbourhood in the world".

UNStudio bisects St Petersburg office with zigzagging atrium

Dutch architecture firm UNStudio has revealed its design for an office in St Petersburg, Russia, which will contain an atrium that rises diagonally through the building.

UNStudio designed the large office building on the St Petersburg waterfront overlooking the Gulf of Finland for Czech software company JetBrains.

Top: UNStudio has designed an office for JetBrains. Above: the design will join two pre-existing buildings

The office will be built alongside JetBrains'two existing buildings and will be comprised of two stepped volumes unified by a gridded facade.

This gridded design will be created from protruding ceramic panels, which both reflect the light and provide shade to the interior.

JetBrains' office will have a gridded facade divided by a glass atrium

The two volumes will be divided by a zigzagging glass wall that stretches diagonally across the entire central part of the building and contains a large multi-level atrium, which stretches up to five storeys at its highest point.

The upper part of the building extends over the atrium to provide shade to the interior.

Its glass wall has a zigzag formation

Inside, the lobby will incorporate large planters, green walls and hanging plants, and open up towards the atrium.

The stepped atrium is at the centre of the design and will form the core of the office, with the aim to create flexible workspaces as well as spaces for social interaction.

Green walls and planters will fill the interior

Meeting rooms, breakout spaces, auditoriums and a restaurant will all be organised along the atrium while winding bridges will extend across the open space and connect different parts of the design.

Office floors will largely be housed in the upper volume of the building and will be organised around both individual and team working spaces.

Levels are connected by stairs and bridges

"We pay a great deal of attention to how people move through buildings," said UNStudio founder Ben van Berkel.

"Office spaces are designed in such a way that they do not create simple linear corridors leading to dead ends, instead, each corridor has a route that introduces a kind of landscape into the building," he continued.

"The possibility is created to take endless walks through the building, where there is a great deal of transparency, also towards the surrounding landscape."

Spaces were designed to promote social interaction

The atrium's stepped design will extend from the interior to the exterior of the building to form a series of curved, staggered terraces and courtyards.

A courtyard on the ground level will connect UNStudio's design with JetBrains' existing office buildings, as well as provide the office with a gallery space that can be used as a winter garden for outdoor plants.

The stepped interior extends to create outdoor terraces

UNStudio was selected to design the office building for JetBrains after winning a competition in 2019.

Recently, the studio revealed its designs for a modular apartment block in Munich with reconfigurable interiors, while in 2019 it announced plans to connect Russia and China with the first-ever cross-border cable car.
