Today's suggestion for academic writing is on how to demonstrate the societal relevance of your study. To answer the question "So what?", first: select your audience (who should care?), and then make a list of potential arguments (why should they bother?).

Why bother? Prototypical arguments about societal relevance start with the following observations:

1. Alot of money (time, resources) is at stake. Quote a study from an authoritative source quantifying the amount at stake. For instance: “Last year, 41% of the Dutch population older than 15 is active as a volunteer (Statistics Netherlands, 2023) - that's 6.2 million persons working for societal initiatives without pay.”

2. People are concerned about your main dependent or independent variable. The concern could be that the desired amount has declined, will decline, or that the phenomenon that you are studying will disappear altogether. You can refer to statements of politicians, influential views expressed in op-eds, results of surveys and polls on the problem that got into the media.

3. Alot has been tried to avoid or promote your dependent variable, but...

e ...itis not clear whether or to what extent these interventions have worked - i.e. whether the interventions have been effective or not.

e ..itisclear that these interventions have not worked, and now we want to know what kind of alternative solution would work.

e ..itisnot clear to what extent the interventions have been efficient.

e ..itisclear that the interventions have not been efficient, and now we want to know what alternative interventions would be more efficient.

For all the faults of those who governed in his name, #KarlMarx was quite right about #valorization and #exchange.

The exchange of capital creates no new value, but instead results in the further accumulation of wealth. This is what happens in non-productive capitalist economies such as that of the UK. The rich get massively richer, and the poor struggle to survive.
