Luce ceramic tiles by Guillermo Mariotto for Fiandre Architectural Surfaces

Dezeen Showroom: Italian brand Fiandre Architectural Surfaces has launched a collection of antibacterial finishing tiles called Luce, which create a mesmerising play of light through sinuous lines and a chiaroscuro effect.

Presented exclusively at Cersaie 2021, the Luce collection was designed by Guillermo Mariotto for Iris Ceramica Group.

Luce is distinguished by the interplay of light and shadow, which creates a chiaroscuro effect

The collection references how light is able to "reveal, mould, draw and sculpt matter".

The tiles feature swirling lines and abstract reflections that create an interplay of light and shadow, which brings depth to architectural spaces.

"The unparalleled expressive and communicative force of light is the inspiration that brings shape to this exclusive project, taking architectural spaces to a new dimension," said Fiandre.

The tiles can be used as flooring, wall coverings, cladding and for furnishings

The tiles are suitable for indoor and outdoor applications and are intended for commercial and residential settings, as well as external facades. The material can also be used for furnishings and accessories.

The Luce range is available with Fiandre's patented Active Surfaces innovation, in which ceramic slabs are transformed into eco-active materials via a process called photocatalysis.

The tiles are antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-odour and self-cleaning

These high-performance materials replicate the properties of titanium dioxide combined with silver, which results in an oxidation reaction that makes the materials antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-odour and self-cleaning.

The tiles come in a neutral palette of six iridescent shades including pearl, black, blue, gold, silver and grey.

Textile wall covering collection by Dedar

Dezeen Showroom: taking cues from the grand tapestries in castles, Dedar's collection of textile wall coverings features large screen-printed illustrations and rich textures.

Dedar's new wall coverings collection has four patterned designs and a selection of "classic weaves" designed to highlight the subtle tactility of linen and jute.

Dedar's new collection includes the design This Must Be the Place, which is screen-printed on linen

The Italian brand points to luxurious castle wall hangings as a reference for the way they enliven a room while softening sound and creating a warm atmosphere.

The collection includes two designs created together with illustration duo Icinori and screen-printed, colour by colour, onto pure linen: This Must Be the Place, a paradisiacal bird motif, and Altronde, a magical cityscape.

There also classic weave designs such as Fitzcarraldo, which feature the subtle textures of natural fibres

The new classic weaves include two designs that recall the textures of a painter's raw canvas, Mandolino and Toile Bâche, and another, Fitzcarraldo, that references the yarns of a gauzy chambray shirt.

"The wall covering collection offers an ambiance infused with texture, a perceptible sense of warmth, and an atmosphere of comfort," said Dedar artistic director Raffaele Fabrizio.

Crown AW21 Trends collection by Crown Paints

Dezeen Showroom: integrity and wellbeing are among the themes guiding home finish choices, according to UK paint company Crown Paints, which has released its AW21 Trends collection.

The Crown AW21 Trends collection groups the company's paints into colour palettes around three themes – Integrity, Crystal and Innovation.

The Integrity trend includes shades such as Family Tree and Cushion Craze

Integrity reflects people's attitudes post-lockdown, turning towards a slower pace of life and away from the values of a throwaway society. It features muted, nature-inspired hues ranging from dusky Cushion Craze pink to verdant Family Tree green.

Crystal considers the impact of colour on health and wellbeing, and how colour psychology theory can be applied to interiors to lift people's moods. It uses pure, crystal-like tones such as Blue Gaze and Teal.

The Crystal trend promotes health and wellbeing through pure tones such as Soft Ash, Teal and Platinum

The third theme, Layers, takes inspiration from modern architecture and design, with tone-on-tone applications such as Soft Lime, Emerald Vision and Splash of Pepper.

Crown Paints prides itself on innovation and sustainability and has set itself targets to become carbon neutral and fully circular in its production.

Its low-VOC Breatheasy formula is 99.9 per cent solvent-free, so it won't emit harmful fumes while drying.

Arakabe clay plaster by Clayworks

Dezeen Showroom: British brand Clayworks has released a range of wall surfacing informed by the Japanese tradition of mixing straw with clay and plaster to create a textured finish.

Named Arakabe after the artisanal Japanese plastering technique, the collection was designed for use on interior walls in residential and commercial buildings.

Clayworks' Arakabe clay plaster is informed by traditional Japanese building techniques

"The use of clay with straw in it brings warmth and depth into a space, while the organic elements are deeply appreciated by Japanese culture," Clayworks told Dezeen.

"It has been one of the essential building materials in Japan since the seventeenth century."

It is made from a mixture of straw and clay

Clayworks worked with a variety of different straw colours and weights as well as different aggregates to create the range.

The team experimented with woody roots and different clay mixes, creating new finishing materials that "incorporate local, organic and abundant resources".

Straw has been used in Japan since the 17th century

Adding straw to the clay gives the material greater flexibility, strength and moisture resistance, as well as acting as a carbon sink.

"Straw is also one of the materials making the world a better place, protecting biodiversity and helping to capture carbon," the brand explained.

The interior of Walmer Yard is covered in a charcoal version of the clay plaster

The Arakabe range was previously used for the interiors of Walmer Yard, a residential development in London designed by Peter Salter and Fenella Collingridge.

Here, charcoal-coloured clay plaster with yellow gold straws was used to create a warm, inviting interior.
